Again with the bus…..

Posted by Isabel on October 18th, 2005. Filed under: Me, Vacations, We're having a baby.

Yesterday afternoon was the 16 week baby appointment. Since I work downtown and the doctor’s office is in Capitol Hill (and The King wasn’t able to get off work to take me), I had to take the bus. Yesterday morning I figured out what bus I needed to take and was excited that it would only take me about 10 minutes to get there. Yea for short bus rides.

A few hours later I realized that I would have to lug my damn laptop (and briefcase and pretty purse) on the bus also. Okay. My laptop weights about 20 pounds. It’s one of those older ones that is just a big turd. I love my laptop, but it is heavy. And I’m pregnant, and out of shape (since I was afraid to work out during the first trimester).

No problem. I made it to the office, right on time. Of course, my doctor was on call and had been called out for a delivery. Fast forward over an hour later.

I was able to hear the heart beat. Fine. I informed the doctor about the trip to Europe next month. Fine. (But, she did recommend that I wear support hose on the plane ride. Which makes sense, since I do have clotting issue.)

Fast forward to the end of my appointment.

My orthodontist office is right across from my baby doctor. So, I’m familiar with the bus route from that area to my home. I’ve taken it before. I began my trek down Broadway to where I had caught the bus before. On the way I called The King to let him know how the appointment went and to have him look up online to see when the next bus would arrive. He told me I had about 4 minutes to get to the stop. No problem, I thought.

Fast forward about 8 minutes. I get to the stop. There was a big sign that says “Stop Closed”. Nice. It didn’t say where to go or why the stop was closed. And now I was in the middle of the ghetto. I mean, right in the middle of the projects. There were kids chasing after other kids (and not in a good way). And there I am: nice business women in her all black work attire, with HEAVY laptop, briefcase and pretty purse. Just walking down the street trying to find a stop for my bus.

I did not find a stop. And the more I walked, the closer I got back to downtown and to my regular bus stop. The King called me to make sure I was safe. I said, “I just got cat-called by some bums!”. You don’t get any safer than that. It was still daylight out. There were other business women around. So what if the bum to business women ratio was pretty high? I was getting my workout in and feeling pretty good about it.

I kept reminding myself about the upcoming trip to Europe in which I will be lugging a backpack around-with all my gear. Which will take up more room since by then I will be in full on maternity clothes. And everyone knows that maternity clothes take up more space.

As soon as I got to my regular bus stop downtown, my bus pulled up. Perfect timing. Perfect.

I made it home in time to get the house all cleaned up (hello, I RULE!). Then we went out for Korean BBQ with some friends. Man, I love me some Korean BBQ. So good.

All in all, for as crappy as it could have been-the day turned out pretty good.

Heartbeat? Yeah! I’m so excited for you! Looks like you’ve made it past all the big hurdles….

Sounds like the appointment went well. Listening to the heart-beat is always reassuring. Have you felt the baby move yet?

Gosh, I would hate to wear support stockings. I can’t stand anything tight, especially if I feel like it’s squishing my already-squished bladder. Okay, the baby has given me some kind of bladder anxiety, but it’s getting better now.

Hey… So, when are we going to see some belly pictures!
