What I do in my free time

As stated before, I like to crochet. I’ve been doing it for years. That doesn’t mean I am good at it. It just means I like it. Because I can’t really read the patterns, I am limited with what I can make. Basically I am only talented enough to make baby booties, baby hats, adult hats/scarves. So yes, everyone I know owns a set. (Hey, they make great gifts).

I may have also mentioned that The King and I are going on our own European Vacation over Thanksgiving. We successfully talked our friends, The Most Beautiful Couple We Know into going with us. It’s a short trip (just 10 days). Because it’s so short we can’t visit too many places. As it stands right now, it looks like we’ll start in Berlin (as The King used to live there and is fluent in German) and then head to Paris (because you have to see Paris and I know our friends will just love it there). After a few days we’ll split up and The King and I will go back to Berlin (because, hello, he loves it there) and The Most Beautiful Couple We Know will go to Spain for another week (because the husband is fluent in Spanish and they are really worried about going anywhere and not knowing the language).

You may ask, “what does this have to do with crocheting, Isabel?” Don’t worry, I’m getting to it.

We have some friends that live in Berlin. The King has known the wife since she was about 12. We seriously just ran into them on our first trip to Berlin in 2003, and the wife recognized The King from her childhood. (That is an awesome story and I’ll tell you about it one day.)

We keep in contact with them and even met them in San Francisco last April when they were in American touring around. They are super cool. It also helps that they both speak perfect English so that I can be included in the conversations. Because just because The King is fluent in German, I only know about 30 words. None of which are going to help me in life.

The King and I wanted to take our friends something special for when we see them in a few weeks. Andreas mentioned when we saw them in April that he would love an iPod but they are just too much money in Europe. We’re thinking of taking him a little iPod shuffle.

Sarah on the other hand is harder to shop for. The King decided I should crochet her a hat and scarf. Thus began the hunt for the perfect yarn. He wanted it to be made out of something extra soft and just the perfect color to match her gorgeous blond hair. Thank goodness we finally found the yarn a few weeks ago.

See, I told you this story would go back to crocheting. You just have to stick with me.

So there is the picture of the hat and scarf I made for Sarah. I love the green color. Oh, and I tried to lay the hat so you could tell that the ball on top is loose. For some reason The King likes them to dangle. I think it turned out pretty cute. I’ve even started a nice gray one for Andreas. We’ll see if I can get that done in between working and packing (remember, we’re moving out of our house this weekend.)

When we got the camera out last night to take the picture to share with the Internet, The King said “do you want to take a picture of me naked? I am sure Toot would love to see it!”

I said “It’s Miss ZOOT, and no, she doesn’t want to see it.”

She doesn’t.

UPDATE:

You have just got to visit ReDinkyDink’s blog and see the pictures of the adorable dresses her Mom has crocheted for her unborn baby (I love the beads in edges, how does she do that?) and the blanket she has been making since she found out she was pregnant this summer.

I would also love to go on a nice pre-christmas holiday like you… The other way of course, but Berlin sounds like fun. I love the city and have been there lots of times. Have you ever been to other parts of Germany? The South (hint, hint) is also very beautiful!

Very cute needlework! I learned to knit about a year ago, and totally love it, but cannot seem to crochet worth anything. I can’t seem to get the stitches even, so everything curls up all funky.

And, you know, you can never have too many hats and scarves (at least that’s what I keep telling myself when I find a yarn I like and need to find a project to use it in…)

That’s so funny that you crochet. I started crocheting a baby blanket during the first trimester. I was so sick that I had to do something to remind me that I was suffering for a reason. Anyway, it’s the only pattern I know. I wish I could make baby things though.

Are you going to make baby-sized hats and all?

I’m dying to learn to knit or crochet. Mostly because all the winter stuff in Florida is totally ugly. I think the rejected stuff comes here…

Dang, you’ve got skills. Your hat a scarf are great. My grandma taught me how to crochet, but I forgot—I could kick myself.

I am sooooo jealous of your trip!

And, before I even got to the part about you picking out *just* the right color of yarn and the right softness, I thought to myself, “ohhh that is the PRETTIEST green and ohhh it looks so soft and cuddly!” Those will be great gifts (the iPod too)

Where in Spain are you going? I feel like suddenly everyone and their mother is going to Europe. Or maybe it’s that I decided I’m going to Europe yesterday, that I’ve noticed many others also planning trips. I spent four months in spain I miss it so freaking much now.

It’s so interesting how Europeans wear wedding rings on their right hand! Is that weird that I noticed that?
