So, what do you do?January 18th, 2006 @ 8:43 am

On Monday night The King and I decided to go out for a nice dinner since we had been apart for a few days. It was pissing down rain (as my Dad likes to say), so we were hurrying from the car to the restaurant. I had my cute new hat on and The King had an umbrella. We had to walk down a very steep hill, and I didn’t want to slip in my heels.
Then we got stuck at a cross walk waiting for it to change. I turned to The King and asked, “what do you do while you’re waiting for the light to change?” He looked at me very perplexed and said, “you’re looking at it. I just stand here and wait.”.
Then he got curious and said, “why, what do you do?”
I got a sheepish look on my face and replied, “I count the seconds until it changes. I feel like it makes the time go by faster.”
He just smiled at me. Probably thinking to himself, “I’ve married a crazy lady!”
I have noticed since I admitted this out loud that I am very suspicious when I’m sitting there counting in my head that the whole world knows I do this and that they think I’m crazy.
I still think it makes the time go by faster.

I watch the people on the other side…they make funny faces while they wait! If there are no people…I count the cars!

LOL…all my crossings have the seconds counted down for you so I can’t even do that.

I don’t know what I do! How funny, I’ll have to pay attention next time. But I don’t think you’re weird for counting. Almost everytime I’m running on the treadmill, I catch myself counting how many steps I’ve taken. I usually don’t even realize I’m doing it until I get into the nineties…

We all have our own little things we do. Like me, when I eat Skittles or M&M’s or something, I have to eat them in pairs. That way one goes to the left side of my mouth and one to the right. If I eat them in odd numbers, I feel like one side of my mouth gets jipped.

I know this doesn’t apply to standing and waiting, but I know of people who, when they are driving, purposely try to keep an even speed bc they swear it makes the light change faster. Does it really? Nah, probably not.

Oh my god. I count EVERYTHING in my head: syllables in words, letters in words, everything. Give me a spare second and I will count anything that is anywhere near me or my brain.
So, if you’re crazy, I’m crazy. Which might not be a comfort to you.

I count everything too! Except I hate odd numbers so I’ll recount until I get an even number. It doesn’t make sense when I type it out but it totally does in my head. I am the poster child for OCD with numbers…

That is so cute. You can use that opportunity as your child grows to teach him how to count. heehee.

I count everything. I always thought I was bizarrely weird. Which, perhaps, I am, but at least I’m not alone in one degree of weirdness.
Actually, I quite often laugh madly at stoplights, because I am reminded of my younger brother–he used to stand there with a tennis ball and whip it at passing cars so that they’d think they hit someone. When they slammed on the brakes, he’d scream “my leg, my leg.”
Not surprisingly, he taught my son a similar trick.
