Weekend freak out
Posted by Isabel on February 14th, 2006. Filed under: Apartment Living, We're having a baby.I woke up really early last Saturday and decided to watch a few episodes of some show on the Discovery Channel on labor and delivery. I started to get a little freaked out when most of the babies who were born were only at around 32-34 weeks.
HELLO, that’s how far along I am. Which means, “Holy crap, I could have this baby at any time and we so aren’t ready , we don’t own any baby clothes, or any bottles, or a car seat. Or even a crib! And I haven’t read anything on breast feeding yet. This kid is going to starve to death!” See, I was freaking out.
When The King woke up I shared this with him. I tried to be calm and explain the situation to him. He to got sufficiently freaked out. I am not sure what part pushed him over to the dark side with me. It might have been the part where I told him the lady on the show gave birth in the hospital bed on the way to the surgery room. Right there in the hall. A baby…born in the hall. I can’t do that.
So we went to IKEA. On a Saturday. Which is the busiest day at IKEA. You should never go on a Saturday. See how desperate we were?
We bought two of the shelving systems we had picked out for the baby’s room. And a few bins to go with it (we miscounted and still need 2 more bins, but we can buy them later. Not on a Saturday). The fun thing about IKEA furniture is that you have to put it together. That is how they pass the savings on to you. The King and I went directly home and started to put them together. We are idiots, so it took us a little longer then it should have. Apparently he and I can build a house from scratch, but a couple of $40.00 wooden shelves kick our butts.

Alas, we got them put together. I washed the bins out and started to fill them up with the few items we have. I even opened the diapers up and put them in one of the bins. Little tiny diapers that will go on our little guy’s little bum. (Did I mention how teeny-tiny the diapers are?) I put all of our blankets in one of the big bins (they all didn’t fit-that’s how many blankets we have). I even folded the burp rags my Mom made and put them in a drawer. (Yes, I know I still need to wash everything before the baby comes. This whole “apartment building laundry room thing” is all new to me and I hate it. Give me some time to get used to not having my own washer and dryer.) Notice his few little toys on top and the tub on the side (a big Internet shout-out to Avorie for the awesome tub!). See, we’re not as unprepared as I had feared.

We have enough room left over that we figure we’ll be able to fit the pack and play in that space also. Hooray. The pack and play we chose has a changing table on it, so that will be perfect. I need to get all of his baby books together and put them on top of the shelves next to his toys. The King is even calling this “the baby’s room”.
Oh my gosh…we’re having a baby.

Here’s the latest belly shot. I took it on Saturday morning, before we left for IKEA. So the stress of IKEA on a Saturday hasn’t hit me yet. This is me at 32 weeks. I am wearing the non maternity shirt from GAP that I got for $2.97. Which makes it even cuter, right?

you are cute. and that is why i hate you. in a nice way.

Want me to come babysit in a few months? I’m good, actually I’ve been called ‘great’.
February 14th, 2006 at 12:04 pm
Love the shirt!
And oh the teeny diapers! I need to start buying some. I think I might freak when I see and remember how small they are. I’m used to size 4 diapers. It’s going to be a shock going back to newborn ones.

Getting a shirt for $2.97 makes it at least three times more cute than it would be otherwise.
Also, I am horrified by the lady giving birth in the hallway. I know women give birth in much worse conditions, but DAMN.

Hey! Thanks for visiting mi casablog – You ARE too cute. I never looked so cute when I was pregnant.
February 14th, 2006 at 12:48 pm
What an adorable pregnant woman you are!
February 14th, 2006 at 1:13 pm
you are adorable, as is the baby’s room. I can’t believe you are so far along…I feel like the “should I tell my coworkers I’m pregnant?” drama was last week!

How cute are YOU? Great photo!
Why haven’t you had a baby shower yet? Are you registered somewhere?
February 14th, 2006 at 1:57 pm
You are adorable.
And, LORD, WOMAN — the first lesson in pregnancy is to never watch those shows!

You are so cute! I always wore non-maternity shirts until the last few weeks when I couldn’t get away with it anymore!
I like the shelves too!

You are fabulously adorable! You are the person women want to be when they get pregnant… so cute!
Congrats on getting the baby room together!

Ohhh…the days of pregnancy…I will be honest and say that I dont miss them one bit! And I have to agree on IKEA on Saturday – I love it…actually it is probably one my most favorite places ever – but…Saturdays…not so much! I love your blog and I will have to keep up – there are never too many distractions when you should be working!

Awww … You’re adorable with that belly.
Are you registered?! If so, where? You must pimp that on your site, you know!
February 14th, 2006 at 7:35 pm
I love your update photos! You look precious as usual
And great job with the shelves. Once you get the pack and play, you’re all set! Oh, and I love the shoes in the formal shorts photo, too

I agree, I’d like registry info!!
I am starting to worry about washing everything. I want to put our crib bedding on but I’m afraid it will get dusty (alternately, if everything is still in the package, the baby will probably come early, right?)

awww your belly is soo cute!!
Please don’t be mad at me for saying this but… have you ever thought about cloth diapers? I am kind of intrigued by the concept (even though I am about five years away from even THINKING about conceiving)
February 15th, 2006 at 11:18 am
Yeah, the realization doesn’t truly hit you until your first night home with the little guy.
February 15th, 2006 at 12:33 pm
Awww, you are too cute! I just posted my 32 week belly pic too… I think you look a lot better than me! My belly is like a round bulbous protrusion. Yours is a super cute pregnant belly.
And the shelves are great! You’re so organized! I’m terrified of not being prepared when the baby comes.

I just got so excited that you’re going to have a baby! Do you still have those moments where it’s like OH MY GOD, I’M GOING TO HAVE A BABY!!!????
I know it’s random, but congrats!
February 15th, 2006 at 7:33 pm
I am willing to go out on a limb here and say the very best part of pregnancy is nesting. Washing and folding and re-folding and putting away and taking out and rearranging all those little bitty *things*.
How exciting for you! I’m a little jealous of this time in your life, despite the fact that I have gone through it almost as many times as the little old lady who lived in a shoe.

Cute belly pic! And those shows are torture, don’t do that to yourself
Congrats on getting things ready and organized for baby. I still have yet to get diapers and burpy things and etc. Take care.

So cute! I wanted to put a vote in for a Britax carseat. They are on the expensive side, but worth it. My parents bought a cheaper one for their car and it was so difficult to use that we bought them one like ours.
Good luck, and yes, stop watching those shows! (I did, however, deliver our baby in a non-emergency ambulance ride, so you never know what’s going to happen!)

I can’t believe you are already 32 weeks. The belly is adorable and you still look so little and cute. I’ve always heard that boys carry all out front and based on your picture, I’d guess you were having a boy even if I didn’t already know. Can’t wait to “meet” him

omg, you are such a cute pregnant gal.
February 16th, 2006 at 8:52 pm
You look fantastic! Love the shirt. I hope you are feeling less freaked out. I kept one of those tiny diapers from when my little guy was born. Now whenever I run across his baby stuff I hold up that diaper. They grow so fast that its difficult to beleive they are ever that small.
February 17th, 2006 at 10:16 am
We looked at that exact same shelf system at IKEA. I ran out of room in the nursery so I didn’t get it. I seems quite functional though.
February 18th, 2006 at 1:53 am
Nice pic! All women look SO beautiful when pregnant!
How exciting!!
February 19th, 2006 at 9:30 pm
Congrats on the baby! You must be so excited! I can’t wait to be a mom someday… the key word, ’someday’, I’m in no rush. Your baby stuff is adorable so far!

[...] And it only cost $2.50. (The previous tree was $8.00 at Urban Outfitters. Boo!) It’s big enough for pretty lights, came with it’s own (pink) stand, and fits perfectly on Babboo’s chest of drawers. Putting the little tree together was our Monday night family activity. Believe it or not, this little tree lifted my spirits. [...]
