Goodbye Mal-Wart

Posted by Isabel on May 16th, 2006. Filed under: They're just my family.

Yesterday my baby sister started a new job. She is officially the first one of my siblings to break away from the store that rhymes with Mal-Wart. She got herself a job at an office. A real live office with computers, paid Holidays, and “business attire” requirements. She won’t have to wear that ugly blue smock and name tag anymore.

We are happy for her. The Baby is extra happy for her. He hates smocks.

Believe it or not, she had to take a pay cut. Which I tried to tell her would pan out in the long run with paid Holidays and vacations. Plus she won’t be surrounded by all the latest DVD’s to purchase on their release dates (the girl has a DVD collection that I’m sure rivals Quentin Tarantino). Plus she’ll actually learn how to use a computer. A skill that (unlike how to use a cash register) will get her an even better job in the future. Hooray for a marketable skill.

Since yesterday was her very first day, she called me in the parking lot before she even walked in. I understand that she needed a little support. Starting a new job is scary. We’ve all been there. It’s even scarier when you have no idea what to expect, or what they expect from you, or even worse, if you’re wearing the right clothes. Hey, it’s hard to have to pick out your outfit for the first time in six years.

Then she called me on her way home in the evening. She told me everything she had learned that day. Everything. She told me about the people she’ll be working with, about who her boss is, and who has face piercings (so while capri’s aren’t allowed, eyebrow piercings are).

I called my Mom last night to tell her I had e-mailed her some new pictures of The Baby. I asked her if she’d talked to my little sister yet about the new job. My Mom said she’d called her three times already. Once in the parking lot in the morning (maybe before she called me?), once on her lunch break, and then once on her way home (after she called me?).

Poor girl must have been really stressed.

I’m hoping this is just the thing to get the rest of the siblings to follow in her footsteps. That place may actually go out of business if they would all quit…

that is really exciting. I hope you are right that she might start a family trend!

If you don’t want to deal with blogger you could always set up a flickr account and direct us all there?

That’s awesome about your sister!! I remember leaving my job as a waitress to get a “real” job, and it felt like a pay cut, but in the long run, it was better.

About your Mac & Blogger. You can do Firefox… that helps a whole lot. But I still use Safari… just cuz I’m loyal like that.

Congrats to your sis, and good riddance to Mal-Wart! And yes, we do need more pictures of the baby. Most definitely we do. How else am I supposed to live vicariously through other people in order to put off child-bearing long enough to make my husband happy?

For my photos, I always upload them to photobucket.com… then I just copy and paste the html code that they give me. The only time problems occur is when you want to resize a photo… if you decide to use photobucket email me (CelebrateWeWill@chopstork.com) and I’ll explain it… it is TOTALLY annoying… but works really really well.

Oh! And congrats to your sis on her first REAL job!! :)

Congrats to your sister! But I will admit that I could barely get through the post knowing that there were no baby pictures coming. I love your writing but…The Baby I Must SEE!! Maybe you should post the disclaimer at the end so, you know, I read and read and read anticipating the baby gold at the end. It’s less painful that way. :)

Fuck Wal-Mart. They fucking suck. Yes. I said it. I went there for nursing bras (recommended by my lactation consultant)– $9 for a pretty good bra, I’ll take it. BUT, at this Wal-Mart, there were TWO computer made signs on the entrance doors that said “NO SMOKING IN THE STORE” because apparently the brilliant customers were lighting up in the store. Since when can you smoke in stores? Seriously people.
I’m glad your sister made an escape. Good for her! Sorry for the rant. I just finished watching the Grey’s Anatomy finale on TiVo and am a little distraught. I mean, I’m sure it’s no 7th Heaven finale, but…

Wow, it’s really incredible that they all work there! You sound like a great sister!

Yay for little sister. And let’s do have some baby pictures soon, please. We might forget he exists if you don’t show us photographic proof, you know!

You officially lose the contest for ugliest baby ever. You lose it so much, in fact, I might have to create a cutest baby every category and put him in the running.

So it’s YOUR family that’s keeping Mal-Wart in business?? I swore it was MINE. I guess, in some way, we all contribute to the Mal-Wart conspiracy to take over the universe.

Oh, I totally feel her pain! I felt like I wanted to puke everyday when I first started my job. I even came home and cried on the phone to my mom for hours. And strangely enough, we have the piercing/capri pant thing too. I don’t get it.

I honestly think Mal~Wart has brainwashing techniques… ’cause honestly, there have been times I’ve walked into Mal~Wart and thought to myself, “Maybe I should just quit my job and work here…”, then I’ll leave the store and be like, What was I thinking?!?….. brainwashing. Or it could be that my boyfriend and I are there at least 4~5 times a week.

My husband’s cousin works at Mal-Wart too…and her DVD collection could rival Blockbuster..it’s insane. They probably make more money off their employees than anyone else.

Congratulations for your sister! I remember taking my first vacation days. I couldn’t believe people would pay you to NOT work. Amazing!

[...] My little sister, who I love with all my hear (even if she does stomp on my heart from time to time) instant messaged me today to tell me that she and her husband are still thinking of moving to Oregon so he can go to culinary school.  Oregon, which is only three hours away from me.  Which means I could seriously see her every weekend.  My sister, every weekend.  I would be so happy.  She could be around when Babboo takes his first step, or has his first birthday.  I could be around when she decides to get pregnant.  We could go shopping together and take vacations together on the Oregon Coast.  [...]
