FreebieJuly 18th, 2006 @ 11:00 am
I have a freebie. I love freebies. Doesn’t everyone like something for free?
What is my freebie for? Well, I have a coupon for one free download at iTunes. I got it off the back of my cereal box. And it’s burning a hole in my pocket.
I’ve been carrying it around with me for over a week. I take it with me to work everyday and it sits on my desk, just staring at me. Daring me to use it. Every night I take it home with me. It sits on my kitchen table, again, staring at me. It’s taunting me to use it.
Why don’t I just use it, you may ask? Because I’m afraid to. What if I choose the wrong song? What if I end up not liking it? What if I find another song I want better, after I use my coupon? There is a lot of pressure riding on this.
Do I want to download an Old 97’s song I don’t have (as if there’s one I don’t have)? We all know how much I love me some Rhett Miller. Or should I try out the new Paris Hilton single? I’ve heard it’s actually good (really?).
What about a song for Babboo? He might like a new Raffi song since we’re all getting just a little sick of Baby Beluga over and over again. Although I’m not sure I want my 3 month old to run the music here at our house. No, we must train him to like adult music. Hum, adult music sounds like porno soundtracks. Maybe grown-up music is a better term to use in this instance.
I asked The King for suggestions and he said I should get a Jurassic 5 song. I already have too much Jurassic 5 on my laptop. I don’t need one more song. Plus, I’m sure The King’s got more of their cd’s on our “holds” list at the library. Yep, I’m steering away from any rap.
I feel like I’d like a fresh summer tune. Or maybe the best song from a really good band that I’ve never listened to. Or maybe even a really good song from a movie. Or a TV show. Or a commercial. Really, just any good song will do.
Oh, or maybe a good story from something on NPR. (Can you buy those on iTunes?)
I’m at a loss. And I’m not sure why I’m so afraid to use it. I mean, its .99 cents for a download. Not to mention the credit I currently have over at iTunes (which I’m also afraid to use).
I wish I could just use it for a candy bar or ice cream. That would be so much easier.
Any suggestions for what I should use it for? Or maybe a good cause I could donate it to.

You could donate it to the “Ashley Cause.” I hear they’re really reputable and … stuff. I say you wait until you hear one of those really awesome and obnoxious songs that you just really want to hear again … and again. Kind of like how “Feel Good, Inc.” has been plaguing me—but it’s not like I want to buy a Gorillaz CD. The end.

I’ve tried not to like the new Justin Timberlake song but dang if that kid doesn’t make some good pop music that I just can’t help but love. Is all.

I love all the songs on the Grey’s Anatomy iMixes, it’s usually where I find good songs. I especially like World Spins Madly On by The Weepies, Colors by Amos Lee, and Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol… Maybe you will too??

Wait, JT has a new single? I was not aware of this. Must check it out as soon as I get home.
Scrubs has some wonderful songs, many of which Luke and I have downloaded. One of them even ended up on our wedding CD. Which, have I ever shared my wedding CD with you? It’s totally awesome. And except for one mention of sex, it’s even Babboo friendly.

P.S. I meant the show Scrubs on NBC. I don’t know if there’s a band by the same name, but I wouldn’t want to lead you astray.

The King has been getting all the songs off of “Entourage” and they are good. But a little too
“hip hop” for my taste.
I’m with Hilary and Frema…must check out JT. I love him.

Life would be SO MUCH simpler if that were a coupon for a FREE Blizzard! I got one the other day and thought of you, BTW!

If you’re looking for a more “grown-up” kids CD, Lisa Loeb & Elizabeth Mitchell “Catch the Moon” is great. We found it a couple of days ago & I’m hooked.

Unfortunately, you can’t get NPR stuff like this American Life from itunes. You can get it at another website. Can’t remember the name right now, but I know it is “Audio” something or other.
Don’t know if it is your type of music, but you should listen to a snippet of “In the Waiting Line” by Zero Seven. I bought it a couple of weeks ago and now listen to it obsesively. All their music is very relaxing.

If you are looking for Babboo songs, I’ve heard ‘They Might Be Giants’ has some pretty good stuff. There is also ‘Ralph’s World’, but he is a little more kiddish.
You could also just download someone totally new. Then if they are horrible you can say to yourself, “At least it was free”.

Hmmm I’m all about getting kids to like adult music as soon as possible. And with that said, I have to suggest a Guster song. Any Guster song. I can’t pick. Well, I can advise, but that would be tooo long of a comment.

I gotta tell ya - the Paris Hilton song is really decent. I had it on my MySpace page for a while - and although I caught hella flack for it from my hippie friends…I like it anyway…
Looking for a compromise and also something that the youngin’ can get into? How about Jimmy Buffet or Bob Marley? My first tape ever (purchased by my parents) was Bob Marley and the Wailers…now, granted, I did end up smokin crap tons of pot when I got older, I still vote for Bob…it’s a good clean choice…

I agree with Katie. I heard Paris Hilton’s song for the first time this morning. When the guy on the radio said that’s what they were playing next, I thought “This is bound to be hilarious!” And then it was suprisingly … not … awful. I didn’t know what to think. I wanted so badly to not like Paris Hilton, but the song was … kinda good.
I heard it again this afternoon and decided to give in already and admit that I like it.

Anything by Corrine Bailey Ray. Or Johnny Cash, of course (but I would hope you already have all of his albums!)

I do like the new JT single, as well. You can get “Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me” (the NPR news quiz, which always makes me laugh) for free every week as a podcast through iTunes.

I am the same way with anything. When I get something for free, I’ll save it for a long time. I do that with candy bars. I’ll save them so I can eat them at just the right moment and then I wait too long and have to throw it away. It’s frustrating.

Well I’m gonna be totally different from everyone else and tell you to buy “Drunk on Love” by Radney Foster. Then you and The King can dance and make sweet love in the living room…

Man, if I had that coupon, I would have used it the moment I got it, and also bought 10 other songs while I was there because I wouldn’t be able to decide. People like me are the reason they give out those coupons…. I admire your restraint.
Um, I also sort of love the Paris Hilton song (”Stars are Blind” or something like that). I didn’t realize it was her when I first heard it… it’s very catchy.

I’m with Frema! Love the Scrubs soundtrack. This season there were even a few songs recorded by Zach Braff himself. Wow! Who knew…

What about a song from Jamie Cullum? He’s my new favorite. Or John Mayer has a new song in iTunes and it sounded pretty good.

My vote is definitely for a Rilo Kiley song. Jenny Lewis is so smart, yet cynical in a sweet, sweet way. I heart her so much. You can’t go wrong with any of these songs:
Better Son/Daughter
The Good That Won’t Come Out
It’s A Hit
My Slumbering Heart
Or, from her solo-ish album, Rabbit Fur Coat:
You Are What You Love
Rabbit Fur Coat
The Charging Sky
The Big Guns
Keep us posted on what you pick!

I happen to be an excellent cause to donate too. Tax deductible at that.
I’ve had the same free download burning a hole through my plastic shelving for about three months. I have until October to decide what song I MUST have. It’s such a hard decision.
