…and this is why he hasn’t been sleeping

Posted by Isabel on February 27th, 2007. Filed under: My Sweet Babboo.

Remember last week when all we talked about was how Babboo hasn’t been sleeping? We were having a hard time at our house. A very hard time. I was questioning if my Sweet Babboo was going to be an only child. I called my friend who is pregnant with her third baby and asked her; how, why?!!! We were baffled. We were tired.

We were spent.

Friday morning I got a call from Babboo’s school. He was being sent home. He was “freaking out”. I ran and got him. Calmed him down. And then headed home to our bed. Then the fever started. And the sweat. And the need to only be touched by mommy. We called his doctor who said not to worry until he’d had the fever for three days.

Then somehow Sunday rolled around and in between the lack of sleep and giving of Tylenol and we noticed some draining coming out of Babboo’s right ear.

An ear infection.

That would explain the non-sleeping and the fever and Babboo hitting the side of his head earlier in the week. How had we missed this? How did we not know the signs? We called the doctor, who said he was fine now. The leakage meant the pressure was being released. It was a good sign. (Well, not “good”, but better.) They told us he would need to be seen within the next 24 hours.

Monday morning I got him an appointment, called in to tell my work, and headed to the doctor’s office. That’s when they told us our appointment had been made for tomorrow! And our regular doctor had quit. And ha-ha-ha, there’s nothing you can do about it.

Thankfully The King was there. He is much nicer than I am. He was all; Oh, really? Well, can you see if you can squeeze us in, since we’re here and all? I wouldn’t have been so nice. And we probably wouldn’t have gotten in.

The back-up doctor (who ended up being very lovely) checked him out. I had to literally hold Babboo so he could check out his ear. He verified that it was gross, and in fact, infected. He aslo verified that his left ear was also infected. Poor guy. No wonder he was so miserable. I don’t blame him.

We were given some antibiotics and sent home. He said there would still be more days of the misery. And more days of missed work. For me. Since The King has a new job, I’m the one that will be staying home. Hopefully my work really understands.

And hopefully Babboo will start to feel a little better and won’t have to sleep without trying to not touch his ears.

Poor Babboo! I don’t remember any childhood ear infections, but along with developing allergies at 18, I also started getting ear infections. all. the. stinking. time. owwwww. Poor lil one.

Hey, but don’t beat yourself up about not catching the signals. Babies are cagey little creatures, ya know? Enigmatic. You still rock as a momma. :)

  2. ReDinkyDink

Poor little guy. I had constant ear infections as a child and the only thing that helped was a warm towel over my ears.

  3. frannie

poor, poor, sweet Babboo!!!! What a brave little man he is to have gone through so much in the last week.

  4. amy

poor baby. poor mom and dad, too! the antibiotics will kick in and everyone can get some much needed rest!

  5. Jezer

I am so sorry. And I’m sorry that I didn’t mention last week that Alex’s sleep problems started about the same time that his ear problems did. I was hoping for your sake that it was just coincidence.

Poor little Babboo. And poor you. There’s nothing that feels worse than knowing your little man feels bad.

I know it doesn’t make you feel much better right now, but the fact that Babboo attends “school” and is 10 months old at his first ear infection? Remarkable. That’s a healthy kiddo right there. Just get him through the winter and spring and you’ll probably be home free.

Hang in there. All of you.

  6. Frema

Poor little guy! He looks so sweet laying there.

I’m really sorry he has an ear infection. However, at least you know what’s wrong. At least there’s something that can be done to make him feel better.

While you’re spending the next few days at home, make sure you get some sleep. You deserve it!

  7. Stephanie

Poor Babboo! I feel so bad for him, I remember how miserable those ear infections were! Haven’t had one in years, but I had them chronically through my teen years. I hope he feels better soon…I’ll be thinking of you!

Gotta chime in: Poor Babboo!! Here’s wishing him a speedy recovery and lots of glorious sleep for you all.

Have you finished watching the Oscars yet?

  9. Jen

Oh, the poor little monkey. My little one–who’s roughly Babboo’s age–is just getting over his first ear infection, and it was just awful to watch him so sad and in so much pain.

Hope your little man feels better soon!

  10. anna

Oh, poor you guys. At least he can only get better from here. I hope it’s soon for all three of you.

Ear infections are evil! Abbie had 12 in 10 months!! That is why she has tubes now. Luckily he is older when he is getting his first _ I know that sounds weird, but most likely he won;t have regular problems with them like so many kids. Hang in there. The worst has passed. It is so hard to see them upset and in pain. hugs!

  12. ramblingmuse

Awww…the poor thing! :( He looks so sweet in that pic, but I’m sure you all are having a tough time.

And what was that about the doc? Was your regular doc the one who told you to bring him in but failed to tell you he had quit? Huh??

Glad you guys got in anyway. Here’s to a speedy recovery for all!!

  13. alyndabear

Poor little chook. At least you know why now — and hopefully he’ll beat that infection, get some catch up sleep and let you and the King get some too!

  14. LaLa

    Ow.

My heart beats for all of you, I grew up with ear infections and they are so not fun for anyone.
But hey! He does illness with style, looking all adorable as he does.
    As for the symptoms. Gross.

  15. Erika

That picture is ADORABLE, but then I read that he’s lying that way because he’s trying not to touch his ears and I’m heartbroken. Poor Babboo. Thank goodness for amoxycilin.

  16. Liza

    Yogurt!

You and Babboo both should up your yogurt with acidophilous intake immediately and stay that way through all of the antibiotics. Get extra acidophilous that you buy at the fancy grocery store or fancy drug store mixed into the yogurt. Break open a capsule or crush a tablet and just stir up it in the container. I’m not even kidding.

I SOOOOOO don’t want you guys to suffer with thrush on top of all this, and I didn’t listen to my nice doctor friend who gave Noah antibiotics and casually commented that I should also feed him yogurt.

And just in case, the very second you notice any pain while nursing while Babboo is recovering from this nasty ear infection, call your doctor and tell them on the phone that you’re afraid you and your baby have thrush. Ok, maybe not that second, but seriously in the first 5 minutes after Babboo finishes. It’s horrible and it takes 2 weeks — at least — to completely cure. Use the hyped up yogurt treatment to try to avoid getting it in the first place.

  17. Liza

PS — I’m so glad you’re all getting to sleep again!

  18. Jennifer

Oh, poor babboo!! At least now you guys have a reason why the past few weeks have been so bad, and a fixable reason at that. My brother used to get ear infections all the time. Here’s to hoping this is Babboo’s one and only!

  19. Lindsey

Poor Babboo. I hope he is feeling better very soon. I also hope that your work is understanding!

  20. CPA Mom

Poor Babboo! We just finished ear infection 16? 17? for Tigger.

  21. Amy W

I feel your pain…Audrey, my one year old, just got tubes in her ears the beginning of February. She pretty much had an ear infection for two months..anyways, the not sleeping? They like to be held up right so their ears don’t hurt. Fun for the parents, I know.

  22. dee

Ear infections suck! They sneak up on you when you least suspect it. My son just got over ear infection number who knows what. He’s scheduled to get tubes in his ears next month.

  23. alison

Awww – poor little booger! But he looks so cute sleeping like that! Hope he’s all better soon.

  24. Britt

Well, despite the “gross” infection, he still looks incredibly charming in his photos!

    Get well soon Sweet Babboo!

  25. Rachel

It is more than easy to miss this signs of an ear infection. Alot of times there are NO signs, so don’t feel bad about that. Poor little guy, I’m glad he got in to see the doctor and that he will be feeling better soon. I hope you are all able to get back to a good routine soon and get some sleep.

    Hugs to Babboo!

  26. anne nahm

Poor little guy! Although I feel compelled to tell you that as a kid, I got ear infections all the time. My mom wouldn’t know until the tale-tell ear leakage.

The doc got all over her eventually, saying that I must have been screaming bloody murder. But I never did. In fact, I still don’t. I get crabby and uncomfortable, but that’s pretty much it. So at least from my personal experience, you can have your eardrum rupture and not have too many good signals beforehand.

  27. Molly

Awww poor little guy!! I really hate ear infections for this very reason – the poor kids are in pain and have no way to tell us until we figure it out days later. Thankfully, Jack has been ear infection free for his whole life so far. (You know what he will come down with tomorrow, right?) Ear infections and teeth. The source of 90% of the misery of motherhood.

I hope he gets better soon! (He looks SO SWEET sleeping there.)

  28. mad mom

awwww, poor baby boy. its so hard to see our kids sick. i hope he’s feeling better very soon.

  29. Stuart

I’m so sorry. That with my elder Boy…he was sort of whiny for a few days, and then not sleeping that great. We thought he was working it, trying to get to stay up later than normal, and some other stuff. He didn’t have any other symptoms per se – Cut to the chase, one of his ears blew out, literally, which made us feel like (rightfully so) the worst parents in the world. I hope your sweet Boy gets well soon, and everyone can get some sleep.

  30. Christar

Poor Babboo! That’s so sad! Hopefully once he’s better you all can get some sleep. Well at least he looks adorable, even if he is sick!

  31. Chas

We went through this same thing back in December with Lila. It’s very pitiful to see your baby so helpless. I hope Babboo is over the worst of it!

  32. Lisa B

Oh that POOR little man! And poor you guys too. Hope he feels better soon. (And hope you are able to get some sleep too.)

  33. Anth

Oh poor sweet Babboo, he is so cute even while painfully sick!!!!

  34. hola, isabel » Can you ever talk too much about ear drainage?

[...] We’re over the ear infections at our house. Babboo seems to be all better. Thanks to the miracle of antibiotics and Tylenol. It was alarming to see the amount of ear liquid that seeped out of his tiny little ears. At one point I wondered if it was his actual brain that was leaking out. I mean, where was this coming from?
