An Open Letter to our Memorial Day Vacation

Dear Vacation to Vancouver, Canada:

Hi. It’s me, Isabel. You know, your loyal fan. The gal that’s been excited to partake in your glorious away from work goodness since January. Yeah, remember me?

I’ve been anxious to sleep in your cozy hotel bed and not getting up early for work. I’ve been dreaming about swimming in your pool and drinking up your sweet exchange rate (which must be noted isn’t as sweet as it once was.) Do I even have to mention how I’ve been longing to eat out every meal? Because yeah, I’ve been looking forward to that part too. Just the thought of awesome hotel snuggle time with The King and Sweet Babboo has been getting be through the day these last few weeks.

Tell me this. Why are you suddenly so damn expensive? What happened to the $60 a night hotel rooms that we’ve enjoyed in the past? Why are those same $60 hotel rooms now over $200? Are they a thing of the past? Is Memorial Day some sort of crazy Canadian holiday that I don’t know about? Is that the day you celebrate the “U” in favourite? Because I’m down with that. I’d celebrate. Just bring back the cheap hotel room rates.

Damn, that’s a lot for a hotel room!

I tried to find a cheap hotel. I even thought about staying outside of the city a little bit. But no, the hotels there are expensive. Plus then we’d have to drive around. And I hate that. I’d much rather just walk outside my hotel and be in the heart of the city.

So yeah, it looks like you won this time. We’re not going to go to Canada. We can’t afford to bask in your splendid goodness. We’re just going to have to hold off on this little trip until your hotels go back to their old price.

Instead we’ll stay home. We’ll sleep in our own bed (no more sleeping in the front room for us) and eat in our own kitchen and maybe even work over at the new house. But I’ll have you know, we’re still gonna (try to) have a BBQ and maybe even visit a park.

You may have won the battle, but you haven’t won the war. (Not to imply going to war with Canada. Dude, I don’t want that. I love Canada. Love it so much. I mean, dude, they have Roots for crying out loud.)

Heartbroken,

Isabel

Dear Interweb:

Does anybody have any suggestions for a last minute Memorial Day weekend vacay that won’t cost a billion dollars?

Love,

Isabel

Portland! You can stay at McMenamins! http://www.mcmenamins.com

Here is my suggestion…pick 4 cities you would like to visit, decide how much you would like to spend on the hotel, rank your cities 1-4 and starting with your fave…do a priceline bid for a 4 star hotel at $20 less than the price you are willing to pay. Priceline will come back and tell you the lowest rate it can get you for hotels in the area. We did this for Las Vegas and got a room at the Westin for $120 a night (on a weekend).

You are always welcome to come to Chicago…but the airfare might eat into your budget! Have Fun!

What about a road trip out to Eugene or something?

  4. Rachel

I’m pretty sure Memphis is cheap! And I did the My Hometown thing and made it sound pretty good…I think.

That’s so sad. I heart Vancouver. But not if it’s going to get superexpensive.

You could do the home city vacation… that’s pretty much my only suggestion since I’m an East Coaster.

Boo! Boo on Canada!! Wish I had some fantastic vacation advice.

I have to agree to the whole “stay in the nearest largish town/city vacation” thing. You could still do everything you were looking forward to. Or stay home, don’t work, eat out or order in for all meals, and find out what’s going on that is fun in you area- I know there is a link on my yahoo home page to stuff like that…

You can also check out other online places like cheaptickets or travelocity or expedia or hotels.com- just check out what deals they are offering- I’ve noticed if you don’t really care where you go they often have cheap tickets only a couple weeks in advance to random places. Like SUPER cheap.

Oh, how disappointing! I’m sorry! I would have DIED if we hadn’t gone to Reno after how long I was looking forward to it.

The only thing I can think of is camping, but if you’re like me and don’t like to sleep on the ground in a tent, you could always do little cabin camping. I don’t know if they have any there, but they have some here that are awesome! Little cabins with 2 beds, and each has a fire pit, and there’s a playground and swimming pool! Hopefully you get to do something! :)

You guys like to go to L.A. How about that?

I’m sorry your vacation plans aren’t working out like you planned. You should definitely go somewhere. (Although a barbeque sounds like fun!)

  10. Emily

So sad your vacation got ruined. Damn that Canada! Just kidding, it has the better side of Niagra, so it’s cool. Hope something works out!

Oh yea, and not only is the extra “U” they throw in worthy of a holiday, aboot (about) is worthy too.

  11. Sterlingirl

Ok, so I know I hardly comment on your blog, BUT we always have a cook out Memorial Day weekend. You’re more than welcome to come to Memphis and meet the fam. I’m sure they’d love it!

I’m not really crazy. I promise.

  12. janet

oh. you really shouldn’t read my blog today. (is it too late? have you already?)

    Wanna go to Charleston???????

  13. HollowSquirrel

Canada…not a bunch of morons. They know it’s a US holiday and jacked up the prices on ya’ll.

Two words: Upstate New York. Oops. Three words.

Nice shirt, Babboo!! Yay Babboo! You are so nibbleable. Yes, that’s a word.

Ok for vacation ideas: uhhhhhhhhh duh. I don’t know. Upstate New York? Oh… how ’bout like 2.5 hours north of New York City? I know, I know, you’re coming in September… Let me work on your Memorial Weekend plans. I’ll get back to you.

  14. MK

I wish I could make a cheep suggestion, but I don;t have any. Everything gets more expensive over Memorial Weekend. We are actually having problems finding a hotel in NY in July within our price range! Ugh! And we have plain tickets, so we are stuck. No fun!

The BBQ and park sound good though!

  15. jessica

    Check out 11thhourvacations.com
I’m not sure what your price range is, but they specialize in last minute deals, so you may be able to find something intriguing.

Colin and I were all set to go to Mexico for our anniversary (memorial day weekend) when I realized that I never changed my name on my passport. Sucks.

  16. Kathleen

What about somewhere on the Oregon Coast? Or Long Beach on the WA coast? Ummm…Lake Crescent on the Olympic Peninsula? Leavenworth? Lake Chelan? Most of those probably won’t have started their high season yet…

Portland could be fun. There is a fun hotel that we like called the Hotel Lucia — it’s downtown, swanky, and usually pretty reasonable.

Or, you guys could just get a room at the Ace Hotel for a night and play tourist in Seattle again! :p

  17. SJ

Aw man, that sucks. And what sucks even more is that I have no suggestions, well except for maybe Colorado?

  18. Lindsey

WTF happened to Canada’s cool factor? Totally out the window apparently. What a bummer. I’m angry at our neighboUrs of the north.
