Eye love you

You’ve all read the stories about the model who is discovered in a post office or at the mall with friends. There she is, 14 years old and just hanging out with her girlfriends looking for cute boys. Then some guy from a talent agency sees her, signs her to his agency, and makes her even more beautiful, rich and famous.

My mom fell instantly in love with Babboo the second he was born. I heard her say to people that she was surprised I hadn’t been stopped on the street by a modeling agent begging me to let them put him in commercials. She literally thought someone would just walk up to me and sign my baby up for commercials on the street.

She was completely serious and I thought it was cute.

I mean, we all think our kid is cute. I imagine you think your grandkids are even cuter.

Eventually people did started to stop me on the street or in the store. They would always say the same thing, “look at those lashes!” The first time it happened I responded by saying, “I know! They just grew in last week!” I was just as shocked by his lashes as they were.

After a while I wasn’t so shocked when someone would mention his eyelashes. Yeah, yeah, they are long. Yeah you’re right, long eyelashes are always wasted on boys. No, he doesn’t get them from me and he for sure doesn’t get them from his dad.

I realized that probably wasn’t the best response either. I mean, you can’t just blow off a compliment about your kid. It just isn’t right. Plus I hate being rude. (Well, I sort of hate being rude. That’s a topic for another day.)

For some reason I never felt that saying “thank you” was the correct response either. I mean it’s not like they are congratulating me on winning the Gold in figure skating. I really had nothing to do with his eyelashes being so long. He was just sort of born that way. I could take none of the credit.

So now I usually just agree with them that they are in fact really long and get back to whatever I was doing.

Last week in line at Old Navy a very handsome man was standing in front of us. He kept looking back at us. I was quite confident that he wasn’t checking me out. Nope, he was checking out my Sweet Babboo. Finally he looked at me and said, “can I just tell you how amazing his eyelashes are?! I’ve never seen anything like them.” I could tell he was a little uncomfortable. This clearly wasn’t something he did everyday. We sat and chatted for a few minutes. I felt like I needed to help him get over feeing like a weird child stalker.

It’s true, the kid does have amazing eyelashes. Not to mention those dreamy blue eyes. I think he got his lashes from my little sister. Her lashes are to die for and I’ve been jealous of them as long as I can remember. The blue eyes? Yeah, didn’t get those from me either. They are courtesy of The King. The crazy tongue and messy face? Yeah, that’s from me.

He can thank me when he’s older.

So tell me, what traits did your parents pass on to you and what traits of yours do you hope to pass on to your kids?

His eyelashes really are something else. And his messy face is pretty darn cute, too!

I always thought I got my mom’s blonde hair and blue eyes. But as I get older I’m starting to think I got my dad’s hair because just like him, my hair started out white-blonde and has been getting darker and darker every year. It still qualifies as dirty-blonde, but I’m starting to wonder if one day I’ll have to finally admit that I’m a brunette. That would be really weird for a girl who’s lived her life as a blonde and never dyed her hair.

I hope my kids get my blue eyes, but Tim’s greenish-hazel eyes are pretty great, too. I mostly hope they get my thick hair rather than his thin-and-getting-thinner-every-day hair! But they could definitely have Tim’s freckles, because freckles are adorable.

I think you should teach Babboo how to play the guitar at a young age, because I can totally seem him growing up to be a hearthrob acoustic singer/songwriter. What do you think?

My parents gave me: thin lips, a chubby midsection, and weirdly shaped fingernails. Oh? You meant something GOOD they gave me? I’ll have to keep thinking :)

For my kids, I really just want one of them to be a redhead. My sister is one, so I think it’s possible? Otherwise they will probably be little albino children.

  3. CPA Mom and Soccer Mom Angela

I got my blue eyes from my dad. My red hair from my mom’s grandmother. My face apparently looks exactly like my mom’s. I don’t see it. OCD behavior? My dad. Tehehehehe

My daughter has those same lashes from her dad. Lucky girl

  4. Steph

I have huge dimples; not sure where I got them. When people compliment me on them, I’m never really sure what to say except “thank you.” I mean…I definitely didn’t do anything to get these puppies.

  5. Marriage-101

My parents gave me bad teeth, crooked knees, and ugly feet, but good vision! I hope my children take after my husband. He has blue eyes, is athletic, tall, and tans nicely. But his vision sucks, so hopefully they get my vision. :)

Gideon has the long eyelashes and blue eyes too. He also has beautiful auburn red hair (which neither one of us has). People ALWAYS comment on the hair.

  7. Laurel

    Those eyelashes ARE Fabulous!

My parents gave me blonde hair, blue eyes and a big ole butt. I wish my dad had passed down his dimples, though!

  8. Gawain

You better be careful with those eyelashes. You’ll need to pin them up to keep them from getting in his food.

I got my blue eyes, easily sunburned skin, deviousness, and sense of humor from my Mother. (Thankfully not her height, she is 5′1″)
My shoulders, a slightly anti-social bent, athletic ability, and nose from my Father.

  9. Emily

He’s gonna be a heartbreaker. What woman could resist bright blue eyes, and long, dark eyelashes? He is adorable!

  10. Steph

I use to think that I looked just like my sisters with my brown hair and brown eyes and heart shaped face. As i get older, I realize I look like my grandfather. He had a long face with a pointy chin and a long nose too. He was also tall at 6′2″, very tall for a man born in 1909 and who lived through the depression. I am the tallest one in my family at 5″5″ compared to my mother who is five foot and my sister who is barely five foot. I realize now that my sister looks like my grandma, with her petite stature and curly hair.

I hope my kids get my heart and love of all family. I also hope that they get some of my sensitivity. I have a lot to go around…

  11. Carrisa

Well I got my mother’s fair skin and large body. And I kind of look like her. Both my parents are short, so I was screwed from the get go on that one. I got my father’s hair. (boo) Both of them have brown eyes so I just got lucky with my green eyes. The boobs must be from the Lord because no one else in the family has them except my sister. We thank Him every day… except for when it’s mealtime and we’ve just ruined our billionth shirt.

Um… both my parents have poor vision which I inherited. And let’s keep praying to God that the “there’s no way you’re that old” gene gets passed from my mom to me… because that woman looks good for 53. Fat + face = Fewer wrinkles.

I hope to pass along my love, passion, and talent for (vocal)music.
I do not wish to pass along my height or body type.

Oh and if I have a girl, I hope she looks like me… because Thom looks like his mom.. and well… how do I say this delicately? She ain’t pretty.

  12. Molly

He is seriously a beautiful baby. He has a gorgeous face.

I see many of my personality traits in my kids (ahem, ocd) but not so much in the looks department. Jackson more than KJ, certainly.

  13. Christar

That kid is freakin’ adorable! Oh my hell! SOOO cute! Seriously, I can’t get over it!

I love my olive toned skin, because I tan super easily and hold a tan easily. The one thing I don’t really like about myself, is my chubby cheeks, but I sure hope my kids get the olive skin and the chubby cheeks!

  14. anna

I look a lot like my mom but got my nose from my dad.

Genetically, each of my kids got different looks from both of us. The oldest looks just like his dad, blonde hair, blue eyes, dimples. My middle one looks just like me with the exception of her big blue eyes she got from her dad. Brown hair and blue eyes is a really good combo. My youngest has her dad’s curly blonde hair but my green eyes.

Personality traits are a whole different ball game. All three do things that make Greg and I look at each other and say, “that was totally you”.

  15. Art Nerd

I look, paradoxically, like both my father and my mom’s dad. I am fair like dad, and tall, but with a flat wide butt like every woman in momma’s fam.

I hope my kids get kev’s lips (full n’ kissable) and my hair. Also his freaky superhuman vision- mine is very sucky. Oh, and my teeth!

  16. Operation Pink Herring

My brother has lashes just like that. He is now 23 and he still gets stopped on the street. Which is sort of embarrassing for him, since he’s 23 and a boy and doesn’t like to talk about his eyelashes with strangers.

Your mom’s adoration of Babbo is so cute.

  17. Chas

Well, my father passed on to me a genetic defect that causes us not to have wisdom teeth, so I hope I pass that on to Lila. I also have very long lashes, and so does Lila right now, so I hope that sticks…people also always mention her lashes when we are stopped. Hmm…and I hope I pass on a lot of my Native American features so she doesn’t end up all pasty and British looking line my husband’s family :) .

  18. angela

I think I got my perfectionist gene from my parents, and in some ways it has served me well. But if we have kids, I hope they end up somewhere in between psycho A-type like me and totally laid back without a care in the world like Nick.

  19. Elizabeth

Well, according to my mom, I have big ears and that’s where my kids get them. Just when I was getting used to my ears… she goes and says that! Their ears aren’t that big, though, so whatever.
What I hope I pass onto my kids would be love of music and learning.

  20. Frema

My brother’s always had awesome lashes, too. Then again, so do my sisters. I’m the only one who doesn’t. At least I scored the curly hair!

  21. Erika

Jonathan has extremely long lashes and so does Evan, so yes I’ve done that whole conversation. I don’t think Evan’s are as long as Babboo’s though!

My dad’s pinkie toes are turned completely sideways (so that the nail faces the outside of the shoe). Mine are too, and so are Evan’s. I think it’s neat that we all have it.

I am so impressed that you actually got eyelash shots.

  22. Rachel

Some people say that Kaylie looks like me so I guess that’s part of what I passed on to her. Definitly, both of my girls have the shape of my eyes and how large they are (which I love).

Alyssa is her daddy’s child through and through! She looks like him and is very rough and tumble. She might have inherited our stubborness and temper, but I dunno.

  23. Hilary

My mom passed everything onto me. Everyone tells us we look just alike. I? haven’t passed a thing onto my kids. I just carry them for nine months. Then they come out looking exactly like my husband. I guess those Italian genes are pretty dominant.

  24. Durga

    So cuteeeeeeeeeeeee!

Some ppl say I look like my mum, some say my dad.
I have my dark skin, hair, eyes = dad
    face, nose, cheeks= mum.
