DC vs. NYC: a photo comparison

Posted by Isabel on September 11th, 2007. Filed under: Vacations.

For the record, this is what $90 a night gets you in Washington, DC:

(note the ample room, two king sized beds, swanky furnishings, and a crib for the baby that you can’t even see because it has it’s own little alcove. Hotel Rouge, we love you.)

And this is what $170 a night gets you in New York City:

(note the see-through sheets, shared bathroom, missing crib and remote control that I’m positive was used in some weird sex act that involved someones a**hole and the bathroom towel. Amsterdam Inn, you are dead to me. And also, your website lies. You are no more a “boutique hotel” then I am Mrs. Rhett Miller. You can suck it.)

UM. SCARY. Did you say…”shared bathroom”? What is this concept as my mind cannot comprehend…$170…must…lie…down…

  2. bananas

if you’re lucky you ALSO get bedbugs with your NYC luxury accomodations…

  3. Janssen

If we didn’t have a free hotel room for our trip to DC (hello, credit card points, finally being good for something after SIX YEARS), I would be googling the Hotel Rouge this very moment.

  4. -R-

    NYC hotels are the WORST.

  5. Stephanie

I am with Erika. What the fat is shared bathroom? I am not about sharing a room where my wobbly bits are on view…

  6. Operation Pink Herring

I thought shared bathrooms were only allowed in $5/night hostels!! And this is why I stay in the Mid-Atlantic, where everything is cheap as hell.

  7. Audrey

    Shared bathroom? Sick.

Thank god one of my best friends lives in NYC so I will definitely have a sanitary place to stay whenever I go out there. After seeing this, I don’t think I’d even consider a hotel, nor would I give my friend the option of not allowing me to crash on his couch.

  8. Beth

    Shared bathroom? No. Way.

  9. Rachael

$90 a night?! Where were those hotel rates when my mom came to visit me. But then again, you probably booked more than like 3 days in advance. Also, the Hotel Rouge is right next door to the building that houses the internship program I went through in D.C. It always gives me such a geeky thrill when I recognize stuff that comes up on peoples’ blogs :)

If I lived in NYC you could have stayed with me and saved the $170.
U are not staying at a hotel in Sydney. NOT. NOT. NOT

  11. janet

hahaha, my heart swells with pride!

  12. Ashlie

Ah. Good old New York City. When DH and I went for his bday last year we actually got a really great deal on Priceline. I know, I know to little to late…..

  13. Lindsey

Holy crap. Clearly, you need to return to DC and do it pronto!! The east coast misses you.

  14. HollowSquirrel

Wow, you didn’t tell me about the shared bathroom. That’s a no go in my book. Well, that and using remotes which have been up someone’s bum.

Still some residual anger, I see.

  15. Lizzy

    Fine. I get it.

    Janet = hotel recommender Princess
Lizzy = never listen to a damn word ever.

Truth be told: we have Google to thank/curse. And that website lies, mutherf*cker! Boutique? Boutique DOLL HOUSE?

(isabel, please tell me that i did the ‘full discloser’ in my passing that link along. i know i sent you info for the sohotel. right?)

How did I not find that hotel when I slogged through what I thought was every single D.C. hotel web site back in March?!? I ended up paying $120/night for a Holiday freakin’ Inn Express in Fairfax. It was completely remodeled, but dangit! Your place looks much cooler and was actually in the city.

  17. super des

When I stayed in DC, I paid much more than that. It was like $200 something a night. But I was right on National Mall.

However, when I stay in NYC, I pay $53 per night AND I have my own bath, kitchen, and multiple rooms.
Course, I’m in Brooklyn. But my friend lives right across the street from that hotel, and she pays like $1500 a square foot. So that was a helluva deal, IMHO.

  18. Stephanie

OOOOOO thanks for the recommendation on the D.C. hotel, I have been wanting to go down there for a while now and appreciate someone else’s experiences

  19. Abbie

You are so witty you make me laugh instead of feeling sorry for you.
Okay for clarification purposes, you came during off season and VERY lucky to find a nice $90 room in DC.

  20. Laurel

I know, I know. NYC hotels suck, big time. I just booked a hotel for my parents for Thanksgiving and we were thrilled to get a Holiday Inn for under $250. What a rip off!

  21. Rachel

Damn. A shared bathroom! Hell to tha no!!!

  22. Liza

It isn’t beautiful, but it is clean and you get your own bathroom. For about the same price, I recommend Hotel Pennsylvania, right across the street from Penn Station. That’s where my Mom and I always stay when we visit my sister.

  23. Christar

Oh man, that 2nd one is…. bad. I much prefer the first one! It’s so pretty! And when you ’shared bathroom’, does that mean you had to share a bathroom with the strangers occupying the room next to you??? CREEPY!

  24. kerrianne

I’m a big fan of the swank-ay red headboards at your first hotel. Good form.

  25. Nap Queen

That DC hotel is AWESOME!!! I’m in love with those headboards. That second one looks like it belongs in the beginning scene of Law and Order.

  26. Jihan

And “Amsterdam Inn” wasn’t already a clue?

My first time to NYC… I stayed at the YMCA. No kidding. And I think I may have roomed with the Indian from the “Village People”.
