How we didn’t go to Canada for Thanksgiving

Posted by Isabel on November 26th, 2007. Filed under: City Living, The King, They're just my family, Vacations.

I don’t remember how it started, but right from the start of our marriage The King and I started our own little tradition of leaving the country for Thanksgiving. It’s not that we have anything against Thanksgiving, per se, it’s just that having a four day weekend makes for the perfect chance to get the hell out of dodge.

Okay, so we’ve spent Thanksgiving in America. There was the one time we went to Vegas. Mostly we go to Canada. That’s what we did last year. Although sometimes we go to Europe. That’s what we did the year before. But yeah, mostly we just go to Canada.

This year we invited a few different couples to join us up in the Great White North. None of them could go. And since I wasn’t too anxious about spending money on a hotel room in Canada while we could stay at our own apartment in Seattle for free, we decided to stick around for Thanksgiving.

For the first time in seven years.

We weren’t really sure what to do with the Holiday. We woke up early, like usual, and The King went and worked on the new house for a few hours while Babboo and I made a few dishes for dinner with The King’s family.

Does not compare with fun in Canada.

By the time The King got back from working over at the new house, Babboo and I were bored. Extra, extra bored. Dude, all the stores were closed and daytime (holiday) TV sucks. We needed to get out of the apartment.

But where were we to go, and what would we do once we got there?

We totally ended up walking over to a nearby hotel to check out their gingerbread Holiday display.

Holy crap, looking at gingerbread houses is way better then a vacation in Canada.

(Okay, it’s not really better then Canada. I’m trying to be positive here.)

The gingerbread food houses structures were awesome. I was impressed. The King was impressed.

Babboo could have cared less.

He just wanted out of the darned stroller so he could run all over the place. And eat candy that wasn’t for eating!

After killing like seventeen minutes being impressed with other people’s ability to turn food into Holiday art, we headed to The King’s sister’s house for a traditional Thanksgiving dinner. It was yummy. We feasted on just about anything that you can cook with butter. And gravy. It was good.

After we stuffed our faces The King and I sat on his sister’s couch while the kids ran around like possessed animals and took pictures of ourselves together. Except The King had a lot of zits from all the bad food he ate. So he tried to cover them. And then I used my awesome photoshop skillz to fix the one he couldn’t cover.

I’m nice like that.

The King and I both agree that next year, we’re leaving town for Thanksgiving.

So tell me, was your Thanksgiving weekend more exciting then ours? I know it had to be!

I request the Thanksgiving (and black Friday) to be installed in Europe! That Seattle view of the world looks great.

The “food structures” look cool and all, but they are no Canada. And yes, that giant orange blob looks so much better than a real zit!!! :-)

My T-Day was less than exciting. I cooked everything by myself (except for the stuffing) and no one helped me with any of the dishes.

And also? My in laws are so crazy I think they tried to pull me over to their dark side.

Thanksgiving is so overrated. Better luck next year getting out of town. I’d love to do the same thing myself!

  5. Not the Queen

Everyone came over to my house. Okay, everyone as in 3 people. I shared the cooking responsibilities this year, which was nice. The next day, everyone came down with a nasty cold. Which I’m so thankful for. Not.

Can I just say that your hair looks super good and shiny in these photos?!

I hope the USD is stronger next year and you can go back to good deals and good times in Le Canada!

it’s funny that you want to go to canada for thanksgiving…and all i want to do is leave! :)

Thanksgiving is a particularly boring holiday if you ask me. It’s just a prequel to Christmas, without all the glory.

My Thanksgiving was spent with Shaun’s family in the afternoon, and then we went to my mom’s in the evening. We went and saw Fred Claus. It’s kind of a tradition to go to a movie on Thanksgiving, cuz, like I said. It’s a boring holiday and there’s not much to do.

    Happy (late) Thanksgiving!

I would have preferred to leave the country, too! Although, that would mean that I wouldn’t have my laptop (Thank you, black Friday!)

I think that is the coolest tradition that you have and I am sad that you missed out this year. You’ll have to party extra hard next year.

What a fun idea to get out of town for Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, we’re not great with breaking the mold. We did spend our first two married New Year’s Eves at Cinderella’s Castle in Disney World. Then two other New Years agos (this makes no sense and I’m not even drunk. I should be.) I delivered a baby.

Ok, you know how much I love my in-laws (seriously, I’m not being sarcastic). Speaking of “food structures”, we decided on Saturday to have a boys vs. girls “food structure” competition. Originally it was a gingerbread house competition, but it turned into a rice-crispie Taj Mahal creation vs. rice-crispie bombed out gothic church with melted candy faux stained glass windows competition. (the boys won, our church wasn’t structurally sound.) It’s like this family is out of a freakin’ movie/Rockwell portrait or something.

And I second the awesome hair opinion, you are pritty.

I will admit to being partial to my beach-laden Thanksgiving. But The Kremlin made of gingerbread is quite amazing.

Is that some sort of serpent or something at the top?? If so, that is crazy skillz, yo.

This was the first time in six years that I didn’t have to travel for the holiday and it was awesome driving four miles instead of four hundred.

Our Thanksgiving was quiet and relaxing, typical traditional style. Canada would have been way more fun!

i spent 4 days at my parents’ house in the mountains where i learned that the operating system on my 3 year-old ibook is too outdated to communicate with their new airport…so no internet for me. sad times. at least there was pie.

p.s. your eyebrows are lovely…especially when compared to the picture of yourself at 17 in the post above.

  18. Rachel

Great pic of the two of you! My Thanksgiving was spent eating, driving and napping.

I’m so jealous of your mad photoshop skillz. I wish I were as talented.

Glad you had a great Thanksgiving!
