In which I take one for the team
Posted by Isabel on February 18th, 2008. Filed under: Addictions, The King. When we were frantically putting the finishing touches on the first house we built, The King tried anything he could think of to get my motivated to paint more trim. The one that finally worked was when he promised me that when I had finished painting every piece of trim in the house, he would watch all of the Lord of the Rings movies with me.
I switched my trim-painting-skillz into high gear and completed the tasks at hand.
I then borrowed the extended version Lord of the Ring DVD’s from The King’s parents and excitedly began making plans for a weekend hulled up inside the house watching all 9 hours of LOTR. That’s when The King was all “I didn’t say I’d watch all three of them. Only the first one.”
Whatever. He lied.
I was confident that if he’d give the first LOTR movie a chance, he’d fall in love with the story and beg to watch the other two. I mean, that’s what had happened with me. I fought tooth and nail against liking the movies, but after watching the first one with my girlfriends, I was sold. I saw the other two, all by myself, in the movie theater.
To be fair, The King watched the first 30 minutes of the first LOTR sometime last year. He bitched and moaned about it so much that I gave up forcing him to watch it with me. What was the point, you know?
Last month I fell back in love with the Lonesome Dove movies after watching the prequel, Commanche Moon. I told The King that I wanted him to watch Lonesome Dove with me as my Valentines Day present. He quickly said that wasn’t going to happen and then sent me three dozen roses.
The King felt a little guilty about this and half-heartedly agreed to give the first (and only the first!) LOTR another shot. We began watching it last Saturday night.
(Thanks to Metalia for her photoshop skillz.)
He fell asleep after the first eight minutes. I paused the movie, woke him up and we continued on our trek with Frodo.
And then he fell asleep again.
Again, I paused the movie, woke him up, and we started it back up.
When he fell asleep 28 minutes into the movie (again!), I paused it and started watching something else, while The King slept the night away.
On Sunday night, we tried watching it again. And again, he fell asleep after about ten minutes. I was so into the show that I didn’t want to pause it. So I just kept watching it. Plus, let’s be honest, he just didn’t like the show.
I guess I’m on my own.
And I guess that’s okay. I’ll take one for the team and not force my poor husband to watch (and like) Frodo and Samwise. And the next time The King asks me how I want to celebrate Valentines Day, I won’t mention Lord of the Rings.
But I can’t promise that I won’t bring up Lonesome Dove again. Because, while I’m sure he won’t like elves and hobbits, he might just like cowboys and indians.
So tell me, do you ever take one for the team? And if so, what is it you do?

It seriously breaks my heart to know that The King doesn’t like LOTR.
I take one for the team for “Harry Potter.”
My husband refuses to like it. He refuses to read the books and the only movies he’s seen are the 3rd and 5th ones (the only reason he saw the 5th one is because I was going to go by myself and he felt sorry for me. And I actually think he liked it a little bit, but he would never actually admit it.). I’m not even really sure why he hates it so much, but it’s probably because when the 5th, 6th, and 7th books came out I spent 3 days reading the books constantly and not paying enough attention to him! Ha.

I can’t stay awake through Saving Private Ryan. I’ve “watched” it many, many times and fallen asleep during the first scene every time. I swear, I was totally shocked when I found out Matt Damon is in the movie. And then Joel told me that MATT DAMON IS PRIVATE RYAN. Oops.
We just finished Comanche Moon (finally!) and oh.my.god. I was trying so very hard not to cry when little Newt packed up his box and walked over to Pearl’s house. I failed.

Oh, how I hate to admit it–I am the one who has fallen asleep multiple times while trying to watch parts of the LOTR trilogy and many many other movies that the Mr. loves.
But I take one for the team for dancing. I love, love, LOVE to dance (all kinds) but the Mr. refuses. Every now and then, I hit the dance floors with my girlfriends, so that helps.

I’m with Jezer – I take one for the team when it comes to dancing. I love to, husband hates it. Weddings are the only time I manage to get a dance out of him – but other than that, I’m on my own. It’s okay though, I still manage to shake my groove thing with my kids!

I am not a LOTR fan, but once I asked my husband if we could watch The Birdcage. I had heard it was so funny and thenI feel asleep after about 10 minutes & he watched the whole thing.
Normally I am the one falling asleep…Sometimes I cant help it – I can only watch The Godfather & pulp fiction so many times…

I’m totally obsessed with Harry Potter (we all know, haha). I’ve tried to get Shaun into reading them with me, or at least be enthusiastic and come to the midnight showing of the film premieres. He went with me to The Goblet of Fire and he was so ornery, I decided to not make him come anymore if he didn’t want to.
But you better believe he watches them with me when they come out on DVD!

I had probably my most erotic dream after watching the first LOTR movie (Frodo, natch), but I couldn’t get excited about (no pun intended) the other two. I’ve watched them, but have to admit I was ready to leave the theater way before they ended.

Jason and I are nerds, so we’ve been watching the extended edition dvds of all 3 LOTR sets since we got here. I’ve yet to get him interested in Harry Potter though, which hurts my soul.

Dude, I watched Lonesome Dove this past weekend and the weekend before that and still couldn’t get Chris to watch!!! WTH!!! They have guns and they shoot at each other! I figured he would like it. But, he also didn’t sit down to try to watch it either. He was doing other things. But, damn, that is one really good movie. I could watch it over and over again. In fact, I have.

Sci-fi. As we were sobbingly professing our love for eachother last night while watching Helen Hunt run to Tom Hanks and tell him that he is the love of his life in Castaway, Hubs tells me he really hates all the Star Trek movies. I wanna divorce!

i’ve been trying for years to get my husband to watch the LOTR movies with me (and also harry potter, but i don’t think that’s ever going to happen) and he agreed….but only if i sit through all the rocky and/or rambo movies with him. i think i’ll keep frodo to myself if that’s the deal i’m up against.

Hahahahaha!! That photo is absolutely fantastic!! Love it!

Are we still allowed to be friends if I tell you that I have ZERO interest in LOTR? I couldn’t even finish the books in school.

That is an awesome photo.
I’ve not seen any of the LOTR movies. And I’m like the King. I don’t wanna.
I don’t like taking one for the team. Thom doesn’t, so I shouldn’t have to either.

I used to take one for the team in the form of watching TWO (2) NIGHTS each week of WWE wrestling. It was awful. Luckily we lost our cable when we moved into our house and I didn’t have to watch it anymore. But that was a long year, believe me.
I continue to take one for the team in missing most chick flicks that come out. When we do see a movie, its usually something we both want to see or for the kids. Once the movies come out on video, I’ve forgotten about them, so I never them until they come on tv. Sad.
But if we lived closer, I would totally watch both LOTR and the Lonesome Dove series with you. Augustus Mcrae is the coolest one of my favorite literary characters ever. I bawl everytime I read Lonesome Dove. Good old Gus.
And, I didn’t totally ignore your last email. Just been swamped. i will totally answer you soon.

I did watch half of a star wars this weekend…does that count?
I kinda sympathize with the King here because I ALWAYS fall asleep watching movies!

I’m not a huge LOTR fan either, no offense. They are okay, but not really my thing. OPH’s comment totally just had me LOL.
I am nice and watch stupid shows like Smallville with Edgar because I know he likes it. I’ve also forced myself to watch Heroes too. I am NOT a fan of superhero movies. Supernatural/ghost shows on the other hand, I’m all about! Love Ghost Whisperer!

ha ha – almost any chic flic we have started watching together has ended up being me alone and him snoring!
I once went to a double feature at the arthouse theatre near where I lived – I wanted to see Blue Velvet and date wanted to see Apocalypse Now (yeah, great double!) – I enjoyed mine but LOVED his and he never forgave me for enjoying his movie.

I take one for the team WAY more than he is ever willing to. I have watched about a million and one episodes of every show broadcast on the SciFi channel.
We won’t even talk about basketball.
Sigh…

First of all, I love LOTR. It hurts my heart that others don’t. Great story, beautiful footage, suspense, tragic love…. These movies have it all!
As far as “taking one for the team” goes, Luke is the only reason I ever made it through the original Star Wars and Indiana Jones movies. They’re not bad, but they don’t float my boat, if you know what I mean.

Last year I asked Scotty to watch Lost with me for my Valentines Day gift. That’s how I got him hooked. And, of course, since Lost has changed to Thursdays now, we were able to celebrate V-Day in the same fashion this year.

Star Trek. My husband will.not.watch.it. Any of the movies or shows. Gad! No taste!
