Too bad my crowns aren’t made of gold. Or diamonds for that matter.
March 11th, 2008 @ 7:01 am

I went in yesterday for my first ever crown. I got two of them. While this may sound like I got a set of freakin’ tiaras, I did not. Actually, I wasn’t sure what exactly I was getting done to my precious teeth. All I knew was that it was going to cost $415.80 and be done in time for me to pick Babboo up from school.

Did you know that in order to have your teeth crowned they must first be ground down to a measly little stub?

Yeah, I didn’t know that either.

Did you know that in order to kill the pain of grinding down your teeth you must be given a shot in the roof of your mouth?

Yeah, I didn’t know that either.

And did you know that when it’s all said and done you’ll feel like a girl on prom night after having your punch spiked?

Yeah, I didn’t know that one either.

I ended up doing the walk of shame home from the dentist office, passing up getting my kid from school and heading straight for the comfort of my cozy wool couch.

Damn, I was messed up.

(It probably didn’t help that I’m suffering from a sinus infection, thank you very much Dr. Google, or that the crowns ended up costing substantially more then I was initially quoted.)

Pretty much I still feel a little drunk this morning. My teeth hurt. My head hurts, and damn it, my freakin’ retainer doesn’t fit anymore. I swear, if I lose my movie star smile from these crowns, someone’s going down.

Because seriously, I can’t afford to get adult braces again!

So tell me, how ridiculously excited are you that the new Old 97’s album comes out on my birthday?

(Dude, I’ve got to try to think of something good right now. My mouth is throbbing and I need to try to forget about it.)

Yeah, when I saw “crowns”, I thought you meant tiara. Obviously, I’ve never had the pleasure of getting my very own crown. I have, however, been a drunk dentistry patient. When I got my wisdom teeth out I was MESSED UP for a whole day. I sat in a beach chair all day and stared off into space and I enjoyed every minute of it.

My dad is a dentist and one summer he had me take pictures of the various stages of crowns and veneers. And those little stubs? Are freaky looking.

Ouch. I got shudders just thinking about my tooth being ground down to a stub. *Shudder* Hope you feel better soon!

And dude, the “walk of shame” comment brought back memories from college!!! (Again, *shudder*)

Oh, I was so there in September, and if you paid 417 for TWO crowns, it would actually have paid for me to fly to Seattle, stay there for treatment and fly back for what I paid for one. OH MY GOSH.

Anyway, I found that cool compresses on my face made me feel better. I hope it gets better soon.

    Gah!
    I HATE THE DENTIST.

I have two crowns as well and the whole experience really sucks. I’m so sorry for your throbbing mouth.

    Bleck.

You need a milkshake or something to make your mouth feel better. Why exactly do you need a crown? I am terrified of the dentist. I’ve only had one cavity and nearly lost it having to get that filled. if I had to get a crown, I think I would need to be sedated.

Poor baby. I have a broken tooth, and every checkup the dentist says “when are we going to take care of this?” and I say “when you either do it for free or when it bothers me, whichever comes first.” That usually shuts him up. He’s a sweet guy but I can’t see forking out that kind of money until it hurts. Bad.

Ahem. Enough about me. I concur with Keri - cold delicious liquid goodness is the only balm I can prescribe. Or kick-ass pain pills. Or both.

Dude, didn’t you ever watch Extreme Makeover…you know, the one before it was all about building people a new house? They used to chisel people’s teeth down to little tic tac sized nubs on just about every episode before they gave them beautiful crowns. It was pretty weird. I didn’t know about the shot to the roof of the mouth though…that’s gotta be painful.

I feel ya on the dental pain - I recently went to the dentist and they did some ’scaling’ which I had no idea what it was (I was only in to have my teeth cleaned) and OMG, it hurt like hell. I was in so much pain and I was rather upset after a friend of mine told me that usually they NUMB your mouth before they do that - and they neglected to do so on me. WTH? I’m convinced that as I get older, dental work sucks. BIG TIME. I hope you are back to normal soon!

And I’m toally buying the new Old 97’s album thanks to your rocking cd you made me!

Wow… NO! I DID NOT KNOW THAT.
I guess I assumed they would just coat your tooth in gold or something… crown, ya know? So if they file it down to the nub, what exactly do they put the crown on? Does this mean you have a fake tooth?

    So many things I didn’t know I didn’t know!!!

I have had just about every thing done to my teeth, short of getting braces. I have had caps before (luckily only on my baby teeth) and yes, I know how bad it sucks. The shot in the roof AND under the tongue are the absolute worst. I’ve had many of them in my time. They’re horrible. I also had a root canal when I was 6~years~old.
I have no idea where my fear of dentists came from.

SHHH! Don’t scare the kids! I’ve never had any kind of dental work beyond a cleaning and I want that whole universe to remain a ghost story.

Oh bless, you poor thing :( I can empathasise, my Mum had FIFTEEN crowns done a few years ago and it was painful to watch her cope.

They gave her little false ones to wear for a few weeks and one day she was flossing and one fell off and I saw the little stump.

    It was really quite disturbing.

I need a crown, too! I’m waiting until after I have the baby to get it done. Not looking forward to that dentist visit AT ALL.

ACK! I had to have 2 crowns too and I didn’t realize they would become small nubs first. Rubbing your tongue quickly over your freshly ground tooth is one of the grossest feelings ever. Hope you are feeling better now!
