In which I get more awesome pictures of people in downtown Seattle

I love City Living. I love seeing things that I would never see if I still lived in the Small Town I’m from.

I love being able to take pictures of the weird things I see in downtown.

I love being followed around downtown Seattle by weird old cowboys.

I love seeing naked bike riders on the streets.

But dude, this weekend took the cake. Apparently it was some sort of gaming convention at the Seattle Convention Center. The city was teeming with, what I assume were, gamers. There were all sorts of people dressed up as their favorite role-playing characters. It was awesome. I mean, it’s not everyday that you see girls walking around dressed as nurses with pink hair. Or groups of guys in ninja costumes with ninja swords.

Of course I tried to take as many pictures as I could, out of the car window, on our way home from church yesterday.

Hey, gamers need to eat too. Apparently they likes crepes. Hey, who doesn’t like a warm sugar crepe?!

I think the best part is that the gamers were walking around in the costumes like it was the most normal thing in the world. As if it isn’t unusual to be carrying a full sized teddy bear on your back.

I think this guy saw me taking his picture. Which made The King very nervous. I mean really, you should not mess with a guy wearing a lab coat and a ski mask.

But listen, I had to take his picture.

The interweb demands pictures.

I love that these people get so excited about gaming. I imagine them attending this convention is like me going to BlogHer last year. At BlogHer we were all carrying around laptops and handing out moo cards. The gamers were dressed up as ninja’s.

It’s all relative.

Head over to read about my latest New Thing. I try out something that’s good for the environment. And fun for the kids.

Oooph, even the mention of the naked biker makes me squirm in my seat because: OW!

    City living is so fun!

This is why I was SO excited to make plans to attend a Seminar in Seattle. It’s like Portland, but quirkier!

The dude in orange is Naruto (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naruto)!

The only person that dresses up in my super small town is Avery. She just wore her new purple princess dress up to the library. Good times!

Haha! I saw something similar last year in San Francisco… I even got my picture taken with Ghostbusters… THE Ghostbusters… or at least their very convincing counterparts. :o )

Darn it! I totally missed seeing this in action.

I would soooo have been snapping pics too. ;)

I would have loved this! It reminds me of the time Scotty were in Disneyland on gay day. THAT was AWESOME!!! Forget about Splash Mountain, we just sat on the bench and watched people all day long.

hilarious. I love that you just take pics of these crazies like the paparazzi. I love city life too :)

Oh, Gamers… you are so silly!! That sounds like the greatest ride to church ever.

Oooh! I watched a documentary on MTV that featured a grop of people known as “Fuzzies.” I am not sure you have heard of them, but basically they’re into yucky, bizarre sex stuff. And they have conventions. Needless to say, if you see more people on the street with stuffed animals strapped to their backs on the street, if you *must* get a picture, make sure you flee! LOL.

That’s hilarious! And now I’m left wondering what kind of video game involves Bo Peep.

My husband is a gamer and has gone to LAN Parties, but last I knew they DID NOT dress up when attending. This gathering of gamers must be of a different sort…

I’m curious, and I’m going to ask.

City life is awesome! Thanks for the photos. You rock.

I am pretty sure that what you saw was not Furries. (Casey, you’re thinking of furries, not fuzzies. Dan Savage can explain it all for you. I promise that’s how I know.)

In fact, I would bet actual money that you saw people attending this: http://www.sakuracon.org/

Here’s where I worry that you’ll think I’m a real geek. I’ve been to SF cons. (Science Fiction Conventions, only everyone just calls them “cons.” Usually with a short nickname in front, like WorldCon, DragonCon, or WisCon. Or in the case of your pics, Sakura-Con.) Only 3 times, but still. That’s not enough to have geek cred with the hardcore, but I’m pretty sure it’s enough to cost me my non-geek cred.

So my husband and I were walking around Seattle on Saturday and we kept seeing these people all over the place! The first one, we just thought it was some strange girl, but then we caught on. It was very entertaining and we managed to follow some for a while trying to figure out where they all were coming from, but we got distracted and went to the library instead (which btw is awesome, just like you said!). And you are right, the gamers definitely had the “what’s the big deal, maybe you’re the one who is dressed weird… this ninja costume is totally normal” attitude about them.

I was in town for a very small conference in Indianapolis the same weekend as a very big gaming conference called Gen-Con – was this the same one? Our hotel has a lot of Gen-Con people at the breakfast buffet wearing horns that looked incredibly real, etc. Weird!

  16. Liza

GenCon is different. There are hundreds of cons like these, all over the world. If you were really determined, not to mention rich, you could probably go to one every weekend all year.

Also? It makes me sad that GenCon was in Indy! GenCon was a Wisconsin institution.

    I am such a geek.

While I’m geeking out here on Isabel’s blog, let me also add that people who go to cons aren’t called gamers, although many of them probably are gamers.

In context, they are called Fans. The F is capitalized. In context, Fans and the people and events that make up Fandom, was originally short for Science Fiction fans. Fan could now include anime, comics, and probably any genre of role playing game.

Awww Seattle! You are so lucky to be close to the action!
I went to school on Capital Hill, and once I saw a big fat old man in a hot pink shirt and on his lower half was a huge cloth diaper. He was also wearing meak-up and a binky around his neck. It was beautiful.
