In context, they are called Fans. The F is capitalized. In context, Fans and the people and events that make up Fandom, was originally short for Science Fiction fans. Fan could now include anime, comics, and probably any genre of role playing game. Our hotel has a lot of Gen-Con people at the breakfast buffet wearing horns that looked incredibly real, etc. Weird! The first one, we just thought it was some strange girl, but then we caught on. It was very entertaining and we managed to follow some for a while trying to figure out where they all were coming from, but we got distracted and went to the library instead (which btw is awesome, just like you said!). And you are right, the gamers definitely had the "what's the big deal, maybe you're the one who is dressed weird... this ninja costume is totally normal" attitude about them.
