In which I preserve memories
April 4th, 2008 @ 7:01 am

Now that Babboo is a little older, he’s been asking to “me walk” and not just ride around in his stroller. While I don’t blame him for wanting to live life a little more independently, him walking does make our daily walk home from school a little longer and more stressful. A few days a week we continue to use the stroller, just so he won’t totally shun it when we all go to Europe this September (dude, he will have to be in his stroller over there). This means that the other days in the week are spent sans stroller, with me saying things like “walk faster” and “I can’t hold you, you’re too heavy!”

Last week I decided I wanted to document our daily walk home from Babboo’s school for my mom. My family totally lives out in the middle of nowhere and I thought she would get a kick out of seeing Babboo navigate he way around the bus tunnel (Seattle’s smaller/cheaper version of an actual subway system).

Before I walked into the school, I pulled out my trusty camera and prepared for picture taking. I put the rest of my stuff in my backpack so I would be hands-free and be prepared for all the awesome shots I was sure to get.

And then I noticed my kid, standing in the corner with some toys. I said, under my breath “what the hell did you dress him in this morning King?” I figured, while in a hurry, The King had hastily thrown an old pair of jeans on Babboo. Upon closer inspection I noticed the pants seemed to be a little short and also flared-legged. Upon even closer inspection I noticed the back pockets had little flowers embroidered on them, with glitter thread.

My kid was wearing little girl capri pants.

“Mr. Babboo had an accident today. We didn’t have any spare pants for him to wear”, said his teacher.

You don’t say.

Oh well, I was prepared to document our walk home and no pair of little girl, flare-legged, glitter covered capri pants (size 12M!) was going to thwart these plans.

We made out way out into the heart of downtown Seattle. Babboo started walking, and I started taking pictures.

The poor kid was oblivious to the state of his ensemble.

Every time I stopped him to pose for another picture, I laughed even harder then before. Was it the fact that he had no idea that his front pockets weren’t it the right position? Or was it that he was wearing his tough new skater shoes with capri pants?

I wondered if I was a bad mom for insisting on taking pictures that particular day. Should I have waited until he wasn’t wearing little girl pants to preserve this memory? Should I have not even allowed my kid to wear girls pants in the first place? I’m not sure what the protocol is on that. Crap, is there even a protocol to letting your son wear little girl pants?

Oh well. Neither one of us seemed to care. We were too busy taking pictures of us together while we rode the bus home.

So tell me, what’s your commute home like?

Isaac has come home in little girl pants before too - I thought it was amusing. I would have totally proceeded like you did with the picture taking. I mean he’s still cute just the same! And those eyes…..

Hee. I love a guy who doesn’t care that he’s wearing girl pants :)

I work in the burbs, and I live in the burbs. It’s a short commute and I drive right past two yarn stores.

I miss working downtown SO much though, because the commute is much more entertaining.

I’m stuck in the boring car on my way to boring work. I would love to walk!

    Babboo’s eye are GORGEOUS!

Babboo looks so cute just strolling along.

I work from home, so no commute for me!

Babboo has to be the most adorable kid ever (I can say that because I have no kids.) When Babboo is older, it will make for a funny story for both of you to laugh about, the time Babboo walked home from school wearing girl’s pants.

My commute is a short 5 minute drive. It is only about a mile and I could totally walk it but I hate walking when the weather is cold or rainy.

That last picture of the two of you is gorgeous! And what about Babboo’s eyes? Gorgeous again.
I love the girly pants story but I wouldn’t have noticed if you didn’t mention it.
My commute is a 30 min drive, mostly yelling at stupid/crazy Brussels drivers and wishing I left a little bit earlier to avoid traffic.
So, where in Europe are you coming in September?

What a cute little guy, and what amazing eyes he has! I love the shot of him walking through the “subway” by himself. Toddlers really have no idea they are littler than the rest of us, do they? Thank heaven’s we have no commute, because along with a very independant toddler, I have a baby in a baby carrier that weighs about a billion pounds! And the capri pants? Just a lesson in non-conformity. Rock on Babboo!

The same thing (little boy wearing OBVIOUSLY little girl pants) has happened to us more than once, I’m ashamed to say. It never fails to happen on a day when we have plans after work that involve taking our little one out in public. It’s a little embarrassing! So glad our guy doesn’t mind though :). Your pictures are adorable.

Babboo is cute no matter what he wears!

My commute home is challenging on most days. When I pick up Alyssa, that is.

The entire 20 minute ride is usually filled with demands of cups and blankets and toys from the backseat and then screams when I cannot provide said item.

And also, she does not like it when the dj on the radio talks too long and she will whine and point at the radio until you change the station.

    Good times.

Aren’t all the rocker/emo boys wearing girls jeans anyway? He’s just up on the trends.

I have no commute home..not from work at least. When I was working though, it was just a ride home in the car listening to the radio…nothing special.

Lila won’t ride in a stroller anymore either unless we’re on a nature-ish walk. She hasn’t been into it for months. It’s frustrating at times, b/c she doesn’t want to hold my hand either. I’m seriously thinking about one of those toddler leashes.

Hah! That picture in the bus tunnel is TOO cute. :)

And as for my commute, it’s 20 miles. In LA. On the 405. In the morning it only takes 30 minutes (because I leave at 6:30am), but at night, it’s an hour (at least) generally. It doesn’t bother me unless I think about it too much. So let’s go back to talking about your adorable son, shall we? :)

Oh poor Babboo! I have occasionally had to dress a child in clothes that are totally wrong for them due to accidents and I always feel SO sorry for the poor kids!

I loved seeing pictures of your commute home - I think it’s such a cool thing to do and have considered doing so myself (like last Monday when my first walk to my new work was filled with early morning spring mist and so beautiful!)

My commute takes about 30 mins, down loads of steps from the flat, along a main road, then through an industrial estate (doesn’t sound very exciting yet does it? - I do go past a church from like the 12th century and some horses!) Then I get to the common and the river and that is just the most beautiful place! Then past a few more houses along a quietish road and I’m there!! It is such a nice walk that I don’t mind the first bit!

One time my sister-in-law bought E two pairs of jean shorts. They were both the same size but one was smaller than the other. I finally realized that the smaller pair had a flower on the button. Totally girl’s shorts. But they were my favorite.

My commute, on top of the hour in the car, usually involves at least 30 minutes of cajoling E to get in the car and actually LEAVE the babysitter’s.

This story is precious. I love that you still took pictures. I totally would’ve done the same thing.

My commute is a twenty-minute car ride. No picture taking going on there.

So, so, so adorable! I can’t believe how big he’s getting! Wow!

I only wish my commute was that awesome. Mine is just driving from home to school, to home again, to work, then to home. Not exciting what.so.ever.

Noah got sick at a friends house once, and had to go home in too-big flowered lavender stretch pants. Those very pants are now his favorite pj pants, which he likes to wear with his “race car shirt.”

Our boys are confident in their masculinity. They don’t worry about wearing “girl clothes.” :)
