I wonder if it’s too early to teach the kid how to clean a toilet?
Posted by Isabel on May 8th, 2008. Filed under: Apartment Living, My Sweet Babboo, The King, The New House.I’ve been thinking a lot lately about what it would be like to not sleep in the same bedroom as Babboo. Would it be weird to wake up in the morning and not have sleeping Babboo be the first thing I see?
I’ve been thinking about what it would be like to have kitchen drawers that aren’t broken. Or how it must feel to have a dishwasher that actually gets your dishes cleaner instead of dirtier.
I wonder what it would be like to have space enough for my child to run and play in. A place where he could set up his train set and leave it set up without fear of his mommy tripping over it and cursing it’s name. I wonder if Babboo would know what to do with this space, or if he’s been forever conditioned to only running in confined spaces, back and forth, back and forth.
I’ve also been thinking about what it must be like to be able to bathe your child in a bathroom where we can both fit in the room without the door being closed. Or maybe just a place to hang all of our towels on the wall. I’ve been thinking about how nice it would be to have a place where we could tuck Babboo’s toys in after he goes to bed. Or a shelf that would hold all of his books.
I wonder what it would be like to have to have a closet where I can keep my shoes. Or a place for extra bars of soap and tubes of toothpaste. Or our winter coats.
Heck, I wonder what it would be like to have a place to keep our stroller.
When we moved into our little one bedroom apartment it seemed perfect for us. Sure, it was much smaller then the three bedroom house we just sold, but it was only The King and I. Plus the apartment would be temporary. We’d only be there a short time. And like my mom always told me, you can live anywhere if you know it’s only temporary.
We knew we’d be bringing home our baby to the apartment. But dude, babies are small. They don’t take up any space. Having a baby in a one bedroom apartment would not cramp our style.
Plus, it’s only temporary. Until the new house is finished.
Can you believe it’s been over two and a half years since we moved into our one bedroom apartment? Our once tiny baby is now two years old. He has no idea what it’s like to have a place to keep his toys and books. He’s never had his own bedroom to go to at night. He’s never eaten a meal at home with his mom and dad at the table. The concept of multiple bathroom is lost on him.
As far as Babboo knows, tiny hallways are synonymous with playrooms. Apartment lobby’s are where you go to play with your bouncy calls. He thinks all houses have elevators and pools and that mommy’s do the laundry in laundry rooms located on different floors. He thinks you get your mail from a slot in the wall and not out of a mailbox on the street.
Babboo also thinks that daddy’s are always working and aren’t usually home for dinner or bath nights. He thinks mommy’s always cook dinner and do the dishes and daddy’s are only home in the morning before taking him to school. He thinks the only day you can stay in bed and snuggle mommy and daddy is on Sundays, when daddy doesn’t have to work.
I’ve been thinking a lot about all of this lately because this week something happened that we’ve all waited a long time for.
We’re giving notice at our apartment.
That’s right, in a few week’s we’ll actually be living in The (New) House The King Built. We’ll wake up, together, every morning and go to bed, together, ever night. And by “together” I mean, all of us in our own rooms. (Well, The King and I will still be rooming together. You know what I mean.)
It looks like it’s finally going to happen. And frankly, I can’t wait. It’s an exciting time for our little family. Big changes are a foot.

I am SO EXCITED for you! You all are going to be in Hog Heaven! I can’t wait to see pictures!

that is so awesome for you guys! I can’t wait to see more pictures.
In regards to the toilet, our neighbors had their ten year old mowing the grass and while he did a great job ( I was surprised) I am a little sure that mowing the yard at ten is a little too young to be unsupervised with a mowing apparatus. I guess I should just be happy it wasn’t a weedeater?

(And don’t forget about the Lizzy Guestroom)
May 8th, 2008 at 12:46 pm
Congrats!! I wouldn’t be surprised if Babboo still wants to sleep in the same room with you guys even with the new space.
May 8th, 2008 at 1:09 pm
Hooray! I can’t wait to see pictures of the new place!
May 8th, 2008 at 1:24 pm

WHHHHHHHHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!
Congratulations! I am so excited for you all. It’ll be an adjustment for Babboo, but once you get settled in and he gets used to the new house, you are all going to be so happy to be there.
WHEEEEE!

Congrats! Although I don’t envy the part that involves the actual packing and moving of stuff. We just decided to make a move, too. And, like Babboo, I’m not sure our dogs will know what to do with themselves in so much space. But it’s a nice problem to have!
May 8th, 2008 at 1:34 pm
Ohhhhh I’m SO HAPPY FOR YOU!!! That’s fantastic!!
Before we moved to our new house, our kids only knew of very cramped quarters and a back yard unfit to be played in (and a daddy they only see on weekends, too). I will never have regrets to have moved here, even in the situation we’re in, because the luxury of having a yard for them and space to sprawl out – and a second bathroom!! has been an unbelievable experience. Now if we could just work on the seeing daddy thing, we’d be two for two.
I wish you all the best in your new house. So very happy for you!!

What a blessing! You will appreciate your new space so much more after having lived like this for so long.
May 8th, 2008 at 2:10 pm
Is Babboo excited about it, too? Like, does he know which room in the new house is going to be his? And is he talking a lot about his new house and new room? I think that’s going to be part of the key to getting him excited about sleeping in his own room and not trying to still bunk up with you and The King. Are you going to decorate his new room in a style/theme?
I think you’ll be surprised how quickly you’ll fill up all that new closet space and extra rooms!
Congrats!

congrats!
A lot of the things you mentioned are exactly why I couldn’t see raising a family in NYC. I want my kids to have a house with a yard, not a lobby.
May 8th, 2008 at 3:30 pm
Congratulations! I bet it will feel so amazing to wake up in your new house! I can’t believe how long you lived in such a cramped space, I just don’t think I could do it. Can’t wait to see pictures and hear how Baboo does with all his new freedom!
May 8th, 2008 at 4:23 pm
So exciting!
For some reason I didn’t think about how much longer it was going to take to clean our new house vs. the smaller space in which we had been living; it was not a happy realization. And is why our house looks a mess on a regular basis.
I know you will do better than I, with or without Babboo’s help!
May 8th, 2008 at 4:29 pm
Wahooo!!!!

I am sooo excited for you. I can wait to see pics and hear how Babboo is enjoying all that space!
May 8th, 2008 at 6:02 pm
Thank goodness!! This is excellent news and is going to be a great thing for your family.
May 8th, 2008 at 6:56 pm
What terrific news for you & your family ! We recently bought our own little house & are moving in next month, & after living in an apartment with a 2-year old toddler as well, i am definately ready for that yard & 2 bathrooms
& what about the screaming ? i think we’re going to jack up the volume to some System Of A Down once we step foot inside the house JUST BECAUSE WE CAN
Have a great moving day !
May 8th, 2008 at 7:08 pm
YAY! It’s almost here!
I can’t wait for the pictures.
Also, I think you should probably teach Babboo to use the toilet and THEN clean it.
May 8th, 2008 at 11:38 pm
“you can live anywhere if you know it’s temporary.” I’m trying. Really I’m trying. I was hopeful at first with over an acre of land for the kids to play on and three bedrooms. But Isabel, I hate this house. Someday you come to me casa and tell me how long I should bare it.
May 9th, 2008 at 12:03 am
Congratulations! It’s so nice and liberating, isn’t it?
Now you can really start planning where all your stuff is going to go. And don’t worry if you don’t have enough stuff yet, you’ll fill it up with love in no time.

I’m soooooo excited for you to move into your new home, and that I get to see it! I feel like a celeb
May 10th, 2008 at 1:03 pm
Wow that’s wonderful news!
You will now be in the top one percent of the world’s population living in your very own modern home with all modern conveniences! I think it’s so worth 2.5yrs in a lil apartment. Congratulations on all your hard work and sacrifices. I can’t wait to see pics of your new house.
May 11th, 2008 at 6:15 pm
Hard work and sacrifices, indeed. I think before you know it, you’ll remember fondly the little apartment that you made work for you and your family but be completely at home and used to the spaciousness of your new, beautiful home. The home that your family built together, because without your patience and support, the King couldn’t do all the work he did to build it. Congratulations. I am sooo excited for you three!

I am way behind on my blog reading. OMG! YOU’RE FINALLY MOVING! HORRAY!
