In which I try to decide if I’m on Team Edward, Team Jacob or Team iPod

Posted by Isabel on June 19th, 2008. Filed under: Addictions, I Rock, The New House.

I’ve not wanted to write a new post. I’m not really ready to move my last post down on the page. But, eventually, I have to think about other things besides my Weekend of Awesomeness.

Sigh.

Things are slowly coming together over at our new house. We don’t have an official permit to occupy yet. We’re still accessing the house through the garage and not the front door (since we don’t have a front porch yet). But hey, as of Monday night, we have window coverings in our bedroom (that aren’t made out of cardboard.) (Don’t ask.)

This means we won’t have to crawl, literally, out of bed in the morning so our neighbors don’t see us in our underwear.

(Be assured the seeing The King crawl around on the bedroom floor, in his undies, is a sight.)

Everyday The King gives me a list of things that we both need to work on at the new house. And everyday I somehow end up hiding in my little vanity area reading my latest obsession, the “Twilight” series.

Never before has a love story between an immortal vampire and a teenage girl been so awesome.

Or so addictive.

I have not been pulling me weight in The King household lately. But damn, these books are addicting. My book reading quickly evolved past the usual “only when I blow dry my hair in the mornings” to…every waking second.

Thankfully my friend gave me all three of the “Twilight” books on CD this week. Edward, Bella and Jacob now live happily on my iPod.

Look at me, Hands Free nerdiness.

Now I can be a little more productive. I can cook dinner while listening to the books on my iPod. No huge hardbound book to lug around anymore.

Not only can I prepare dinner while being lost in the complex story lines of forbidden love between a teenage girl and an immortal vampire (and the sexual tension that exist because of said forbidden love), but I can listen and separate the laundry at the same time.

And brush my teeth sans fear of dropping any toothpaste remnants onto my beloved books.

Right before bedtime last night my nerdiness reached an all time high when I discovered that not only could I listen to “Twilight” on my iPod in bed, but I could listen to it and do Sudoko at the same time.

Dude, while IN BED!

I woke up this morning and was happy that I could blow dry my hair while actually looking at myself in the mirror and not have to worry about reading words on pages of a book.  That’s so last season.

Dude, it’s all about the iPod.

And Edward.

So tell me, am I the last person to jump on the “books on tape” bandwagon here?  And um, anyone else out there a “Twilight” fan besides Christar and me?

(And just to prove, once again, that Mormons are awesome, do you realize that the author of “Twilight” Stephenie Meyer is a Mormon?  Yes she is.)

I listen to books on my iPod everyday when I ride my bike to work and usually while I’m working too. And when I’m doing lame household chores. I love it.

And the Twilight books are super awesome. I refused to even acknowledge a Team Jacob for the first two books, and then after Eclipse, I was a total Team Jacobite. Love him. Forget the vampire.

  2. Christar

So, does that mean you are Team Edward?! Because if you are, my love for you just went up way higher! It’s ALL about Edward man! (I don’t like Jacob, blah!) I am so happy that you love them. Dude, once you start, you just can’t stop. If you need to talk… remember, I’m here.

And Stephenie is so friggin’ awesome! Not only did she create Edward, but she’s so awesome in person too! One of the coolest people I’ve ever met for sure.

  3. May

SO. GLAD. that you love this series. Now we can spend hours braiding each other’s hair & talking about how hott Edward is & what we’re going to do about Jacob. (Nothing makes a vampire teenage romance more awesome-er than a LOVE TRIANGLE!!!)
Didn’t I already ask you if you read those books when you were in HS (or jr. high) that were all named after a girl, like “Catherine”. Historical romances, and EVERY SINGLE ONE had an awesome love triangle (will she pick the rich playboy? Or the hard working immigrant??? Oh Catherine!!!) The twilight series takes me back to that time… Awesome.

  4. Audrey

I’ve never read the series, but I clearly need to. I love a good vampire story, because I am a huge nerd.

Nor have I ever tried books on tape, but I definitely see the appeal. I’ve always thought they’d be perfect for road trips.

P.S. Your bathroom sink is gorgeous.

  5. Diana

    Oh, me too!

I finished all the Twilight books and I’m in the middle of “The Host” right now.

Now, I love the books, but am I the only person who find Bella really annoying? And a bit dim?

  6. becky

I’ve read them too. My interest wained a little during Eclipse; I just don’t think it was as good as the first. But I loved, loved Twilight itself. You know that the movie comes out in December, right? I can’t wait to see it.

I have to admit, Edward is HOT! (Or HOTT as you like to say.)

  7. motomom

A few months ago I decided that rather than re-read one of my favorite series again I would check out the book on tape version instead. Hated it.
More recently my book club is reading one of my new favorite series, Ourlander by Diana Gabaldon. Since I just finished the last book and don’t have time to tackle the series from the beginning I got the tape instead. The actress doing the reading is fabulous. She slips seemlessly between characters and accents. My only complaint is that it is not a cover to cover reading of the book.

  8. motomom

    Oops, that should be Outlander

  9. Sarah

Now that you’re out I will oficially come out of hiding on my love of the Twilight books. Granted I just started Twilight last night and am only on page 87 but still, I AM ALREADY IN LOVE.

  10. Laurel

You are the second person that I’ve heard fine things about Twilight from THIS WEEK. Will be checking it out STAT.

  11. She Likes Purple

I love the Twilight series! I read all three books in THREE WEEKS. Couldn’t. Put. Them. Down.

And, please, can they just do it already.

  12. Monica

I read all 3 books in 9 days. I just finished the Host in 2 1/2 days. Now that is nerdy.

  13. heidikins

Have not read Twilight…and honestly? As much as every person I know is gushing about it, I don’t really have any desire.

I love that you listen to your iPod and play Sudoku at the same time. Love.

    xox

  14. meritt

I noticed you are squishing your ipod in your pocket. How about an ipod arm band?! They are pretty cheap!

  15. Fraulein N

Team Edward! I wish I could find other adults (outside of blogland) to go see the movie with me.

  16. Anna Macfarlane

If you want to talk nerd, I’ve placed the pre-order of Breaking Dawn (4th book in Twilight Series) in and out of my Amazon cart too many times to count. I think, “is it worth waiting for it to ship when I could walk down to Target (okay, drive, who am I kidding) the day it releases and buy it?” I don’t know how far you’ve read/listened, so I won’t go into my other Edward/Bella questions, but needless to say, I try not to talk about it in public for fear I might reveal the nerd I truly am.

Just got the Host at Costco and my husband actually wants to read it with me–let you know.

  17. alyndabear

Oh my gosh…. ON YOUR IPOD????

I am so insanely jealous. I’m reading ‘em the old fashioned way.

I sort of hate you for having the e-books.

And I think it’s Team Edward. And Alice. That girl is awesome

  18. sizzle

Smart thinking with the “books on tape” idea- way to multitask!

I have heard of these books lately and people seem to be VERY into them.

  19. Brittany

    Team Jacob.

I also have “the Host” waiting for me to read after I finish High Fidelity (which I’m on a roll with since I started it Tuesday night and am almost done).

And Christar’s obsession is far worse than her blog indicates. She has a book with her everywhere she goes. She just keeps reading them over and over. Really, it’s unhealthy. Ha ha!

  20. marci

I loved the vampire books…. can’t wait for the movie!

And, I have not yet jumped on the ‘book on ipod’ bandwagon! I suck!

  21. Zoot

I’m team Edward but my son is team Jacob. Our B&N is having a Vampire Ball the night of the next book release. CAN NOT WAIT.

  22. Eve

So you’re comoing with Kathryn, Jenny, and I on our Twilight weekend then? We always have room for one more addict!

  23. HollowSquirrel

I’m thinking of breaking my New year’s resolution for these books, but then, my birthday is coming up, so maybe I’ll ask for them. UGH I can’t resist a book bandwagon. Books on tape/iPod?I love them, too, for trips, but at night, I want lie down with a book…although you had me at Sudoku (LOVE that, too!)!

  24. Frema

I tried reading Interview with a Vampire in high school. Are these books like that?

Also, while the idea of books of tape is enticing, I have to have the actual book in my hands to feel like I’m actually reading it. Because dude, listening to a book on tape isn’t reading, it’s listening. My English-major self can’t get behind that.

But after baby number two, I just may.

  25. janet

I heart your nerdiness, it’s so endearing!

  26. gorillabuns

I seriously need to get an ipod.

  27. bad penguin

I only recently discovered those books, and I love them too! I haven’t made my mind up between Edward or Jacob yet though. They both have their good points!

  28. the king

finish the book. its sad that you haven’t spoken to your husband in a week.

  29. Operation Pink Herring

You’re not a true nerd until you admit to me that you love the Highlander movies. Because I’ll admit it, I do.

Looks like Preston is loving the new house :)

  30. Carla

Wow, another *grown-up* Twilight fan! My teenage daughters got me into the series and I read all 3 in record time. But whenever I mention it to any of the “moms” they look at me like I have fangs!! Then I have to go into the disclaimer that it REALLY is just a love story. (with a little body hair and fangs thrown in) My daughters got all their friends hooked and now they have declared their loyalities to either Jacob or Edward. I sit in the middle. I won’t commit to either. My youngest dd gets soooo totally into her books, that she agonizes and sympathizes with the characters as if they are family that visit regular. This is how she gets me hooked into reading what she’s reading. And because the other daughter is also a fan, I ended up getting them BOTH a set of the series for Christmas! They just could not share! Now the youngest dd is online contantly checking trailers for the film. She agonized over the characters as they were picked and insisted they had cast the wrong people to play some parts. It’s a good thing that I came into the Twilight books late, cos I got to pick up the next one each time I finished instead of waiting for it to hit the bookstore. But if everyone here loves Twilight, y’all would LOVE the Uglies, Pretties, and Special series. Anybody read those?? Of course my youngest dd who crawls right inside the characters also got me hooked on that trilogy. Another love triangle. The parallel between the settings in the book and real life is amazingly done…though they are waaayyy in the future! It’s ALSO an amazing read. And I found that reading the same books my teenage daughters are reading gives me an easy topic of dialog with them…and everyone knows how hard it is to get your teenagers to talk to ya! Smart mom-i-am…hehehe

  31. Kim

Have you read the Outlander series? I am so hooked I can’t put it down. I am so glad you have figured out a way to keep “reading” while doing other things. I, of course, have solely resoted to laying on my fat ass reading a book. No way, you live in Wallingford..I am sitting across the desk from Chris, yes she is Friday night drinking date, who put Old97s on her Zune last night. Hope to meet you sometime.

  32. angela

I would do books on tape but my stupid iPod doesn’t work! I have to dry my hair, do laundry and do other household chores IN SILENCE. It’s ridiculous.

  33. fawndear

So addicted to this series that my six kids and husband have for the moment given up on me. I hope I can eventually get back to reality. But I’m enjoying this fix for a little while. I’m glued to the computer this morning trying to get Stephenie Meyer tickets for when she comes here on Aug 12th, for her Breaking Dawn Book Tour.
It is truly the Mormon Soap Opera.

  34. velocibadgergirl

I haven’t tried that series yet, but I’ve been hearing about it enough on blogs lately that I might have to try it :D

I love the experience of actually reading a paper book, so I haven’t really jumped on the books-on-tape/pod bandwagon, but I have to tell you…this entry makes a REALLY good case for the combined awesomeness and practicality. Having a book WHILE DOING LAUNDRY?? Yes, please!

  35. Christar

Haha, The King sounds just like Shaun… and all my friends’ boyfriends/husbands. Maybe there should be a boyfriend/ husband Twilight support group, lol.

  36. Chris

my favorite comment is the one from the king… that is how my husband has felt as I have read each of the Twilight books… they are wonderful, if a bit all encompassing. I am definitely team Edward too. There is something to be said for a love that can overcome a person’s nature… kind of the whole point of our life here isn’t it?

If you like twilight, you should try Shannon Hale. She is also an LDS author who writes young adult fantasy. Her books have not taken off the way that the Twilight series have, but they are comparable and wonderful!

And, on the subject of books on ipod. I don’t use the ipod that way for myself (there is something incredibly satisfying for me in reading a book the old fashioned way), but I use it for my son. He is 5. We just started reading the Magic Treehouse Books, the Secret of Droon books and the Geronimo Stilton books this year. I love to read to him, and he loves the stories. It is so fun for my child to be old enough to read chapter books with me. I can’t wait to get into the bigger ones that I remember from when I was young. However, he loves to hear the stories over and over, something which I don’t enjoy (especially not with a 90 page book). So we put them on the ipod and then hooked it up so that he can pick one to listen to on speakers in his room at bedtime. He loves it. He can only listen to ones that we have already read together, that way they are fresh when we read them, but he can listen to the “old” books as many times as his little heart desires. (added bonus it is a great sleep inducer!)

    Chris

  37. SJ

You know, I haven’t tried books on tape yet, but I really have been thinking about it. Perhaps this series is a good one to start with? And look at you and your iPod. SO CUTE.

  38. Nikki

I LOVE THE ‘TWILIGHT’ SERIES!!!!!!!!!!!!! I haven’t been able to talk any adults I know into reading the books, but I think I’ve got a couple of people close to cracking. :) I’m Team Edward all the way.

  39. Adria Sha

I have a love/hate relationship with this series. The books were SO addicting, but they made my marriage pale in comparison to Edward and Bella’s relationship. I had to hurry through them so I could get back to my dreary life.

I listen to books on iPod in the car a lot.

  40. Anth

Ooh I love the pic of you listening to Twilight on your iPod while doing sudoku. That is so something I would do.

And I am definitely on Team Jacob. Do you really want to be cold for all of eternity?

When Isabel first asked me to guest post, she said I should talk about the Twilight books she’s been reading and how she’s been desperate to get me to read them with her. I said sure I guess I can blog about that, not really understanding why she chose that topic. I figured maybe she was just trying to help me pick a topic in case I needed help.
