So I like to put raisins in my oatmeal. Is that so odd?
Posted by Isabel on August 28th, 2008. Filed under: They're just my family, one.The first thing I do when I get to work every morning is make myself a cup of oatmeal. Okay, it’s really the second thing I to. First I turn my computer on. Wait, really it’s the third thing I do. I turn my computer on first and then I change my shoes and then I make my oatmeal.
So I make myself a cup of oatmeal every morning.
About three months ago I noticed one of Babboo’s little boxes of raisins in my backpack and thought to myself, “I should add his raisins to my oatmeal. I bet it would taste yummy!” And so I added them to my oatmeal. And it did taste yummy. I’ve since bought my own supply of raisin for the office and use them liberally every morning.
(My Weight Watcher total for this morning meal: 3 points!!)
It wasn’t until just this week that I realized something about my oatmeal and raisin delight….
IT’S THE SAME THING MY MOM EATS FOR BREAKFAST!
For as long as I can remember my mom wakes up and puts a kettle on the stove to make water for her oatmeal. She then gets a scoop of raisins out of the same mason jar she’s always kept them in and adds the raisins to her oatmeal (along with a little butter and some brown sugar, which I do not add to mine).
I’m not sure what aspect of this discovery was more alarming to me; the fact that I’m becoming my mother or the fact that it took me so long to realize that I’m becoming my mother.
So tell me, have you discovered something that you do the same as your mom (or your dad, or aunt, or grandma, or some other adult in your life)? And are you okay with the discovery?
I mean, I guess it could be worse then eating a few raisins in my oatmeal, right?

There are too many things I do like my mom to list them here. It’s a little scary. My husband agrees.
I eat my oatmeal with raisins and peanut butter, and it’s one of my favorite things EVER. Yum!

For ever and ever I looked exactly like my dad. Around 23 I began to notice that my mannerisms were entirely my mother’s. We got back the pics from my wedding and were shocked to discover that not only do I act exactly like her, but I am her carbon twin. No kidding. We look like we could be sisters.

That is the ONLY way to eat oatmeal!
I do lots of cheesy things for my kids like surprising them at school with a treat or leaving notes in their lunch boxes. My mom is the queen of cheese! She once showed up at my school dressed like a cow and did a singing telegram (while I was in high school in Tacoma). To make it worse she made up the song herself. No wonder I need therapy.

the older i get, the more i realize that i am totally turning into my mother. it’s not as frightening as my teen-age self imagined it would be.

My cabinets are arranged in a similar way, I load the dishwasher the same way she did, I keep my refrigerator organized the way she did. I believe in please, thank you, and never wear white shoes unless you’re a nurse or a 2-year old. Always brush your hair and wash your face, no matter how crappy you feel – it will make you feel better. Stand up straight, eat right, and never let them see you cry. If you’re in doubt about what you’re wearing, ask yourself if you could wear it to church.
I fought with my mother for 15 years, and I lost her way too soon after we came to terms with each other. I’m proud to be like her.

i totally do that! it’s not odd.
and there was just an article on CNN about being like your mother, so it’s funny you mention it. i looked for it, but alas, i couldn’t find it easily anymore.
i wish that i didn’t pick up some of my mom’s bad habits, but i think i’m pretty happy with how alike we are.

Maybe 8 or 10 years ago, I came home for a visit. Dad picked me up at the airport, and Mom was out when we got home. I put my purse on the hall table where we always put our purses. Mom came home shortly, and after awhile, I got ready to go visit some friends.
That’s when I noticed our purses. They weren’t *identical* but they were two different versions of the same style. Hers was more of a sack style and mine had a flap closure, but they were the same texture of leather, the same size, and the same color.

Oh and the next year, for Christmas, I got my Mom a scarf she liked so much that she used it as the inspiration and color scheme when she remodeled her kitchen. The crazy part is that the scarf is black, silver, coral, and turquoise! The kitchen is unusual, but it looks fantastic.

I alphabetize my recipes and my spices, like my mom and my dad, respectively. Sigh.

GAG!
I must have my oatmeal plain – with milk and sugar. NO RAISINS MUST EVEN LOOK AT MY OATMEAL, MUCH LESS JUMP IN!!!
And bread? If I even smell cinnamon raisin bread I just may hurl. And don’t even THINK about hiding raisins in my rice pudding!!!
(Did you read my post about a week ago when my mother came to visit and brought two loaves of cinnamon raisin bread and then was surprised when I told her – for the 100th time in my life since I was born – that I hate raisin bread – she acted SURPRISED?)
I swear this woman knows nothing about me even after 38 years. LOL.
Umm… I can eat raisins plain, straight out of their little box though – and I love raisin bran too.
Does that make me weird?

ooh! i LOVE raisins and brown sugar in my oatmeal.
my voice sounds exactly like my mom on the phone, but i’ve known that since i was in high school. i also catch myself saying things to my little brother and sounding exactly like my mom. he’s nice enough not to point it out to me, though…

I’m becoming more and more like my parents all the time, and it is just plain freaky. I’d say the worst is the love of antique stores and flea markets. When I was growing up, I spent so much time stuck at these types of places that I used to swear up and down when I was old enough to live on my own, I would never ever do any antique shopping. And now that Nick and I are doing all this robot-building, we go to antique stores ALL THE TIME looking for parts. Sometimes even with my parents, like today. Yikes.
