In which I recover from the Seattle mall shooting by leaving the country

Posted by Isabel on November 26th, 2008. Filed under: Addictions, Random, Vacations.

It’s been long enough after this weekend’s shooting incident that I’ve calmed down. In fact, thinking about it now is almost comical. I mean, I jumped over the railing of the second floor and stood out on the ledge!! What was I thinking?!?

(I was thinking “GUN SHOTS”! That’s what I was thinking.)

I do find it odd how my body and mind reacted to the situation compared to the way my friends reacted. Why did my “survival mode” kick in so intensely and theirs didn’t? Why did I flee the scene while they stayed in the building cowering under tables? And why did I leave them there and only get myself out?

Before my Saturday was ruined by some 16 year old gang member shooting up the mall, I really did enjoy seeing “Twilight“. I went into the movie not expecting much. I had decided I was just there for the ride. I was going to have fun watching this fun and cheesy book come alive on the big screen.

And that’s exactly what I got.

The movie was just like the book; cheesy and fun. While I admit to not originally understanding the casting of Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen, I was totally convinced of Rob BEING Edward about 2 seconds into the movie. Seriously, he is the perfect Edward. It was fun to see this enjoyable book brought to life. It was fun to watch Bella and Edward interact and to believe they were in love. I enjoyed seeing Charlie and having him more of a pivotal character instead of some louse that can’t even cook his own dinner. I really liked seeing the bad vampires. And, let’s be honest, I really, really liked watching Edward drive that damn Audi so fast. (I’ve never been super into car scenes in movies before. But hott damn, Edward’s driving is awesome!)

I was hoping to catch an early show sometime this week and see the movie again. But it just hasn’t happened. Yet.

Like we always do, we’re leaving the country for Thanksgiving this year. We’ve finally managed to talk some friends into going with us. All in all there will be 18 of us converging upon the Great White North of Vancouver, British Columbia. We plan on eating well, playing in the hotel swimming pool and just enjoying each others company. And, get this, we even have the names of some Canadian babysitters, so the adults might be able to sneak away for a little bit on Saturday night.

Oh, and the ladies are going to try to see Twilight” again at some point.

(I wonder if Edward is hotter in Canada?)

(Probably. I mean, everyone is hotter when they go international, right?)

It’s always fun to get a chance to use our passports, even if we’re only going three hours from home. Plus, it’s been almost two months since I’ve been in my swimming suit. That’s a long time, especially since I spent most of September in it.

Since I’ll be out of the country the rest of the week, there won’t be a give-away this Friday of Kate’s awesome fused glass jewelry. Don’t fret, I’ll have another give-away the next Friday. And the next Friday after that.

The winner of last’s week give-away is Chiada, who when asked about her favorite covers song said:

“Actually, now that you’ve got me started, the whole album called Enjoy Every Sandwich is songs written and already released by Warren Zevon, except they are covered by different singers on this album as a tribute to Warren. I especially love Adam Sandler’s cover of “Werewolves of London”, the song “Reconsider Me” by Steve Earle and Reckless Kelly, and “Splendid Isolation” by Pete Yorn. This entire album is probably one of my top 10 favs.”

Chiada’s the winner because she’s the only one that convinced me to actually download one of the covers. I am not the proud owner of Pete Yorn’s cover of “Splendid Isolation”. (I’m sending her something super cute from Kate’s collection. I can’t wait to hear if she loves it as much as I do!)

So tell me, what do you have planned for this lovely Thanksgiving holiday?

(I totally recommend you read Operation Pink Herring’s take on seeing “Twilight” on opening night. And then seeing it again the following day.  I think she totally hit the nail on the head with her interpretation.)

Have a lovely trip! I am hoping to go see the movie again this weekend. PROBLEMS, I HAVE THEM. And I love it.

Have a great trip! I am going to my dad’s for dinner, football and beer, then hitting the outlet mall at midnight for some deals. Then back home Friday for last minute packing and moving this weekend. Ack!

Enjoy your Canadian holiday and have fun in the pool!

Have a great time in canada? You know I’ve never been out of the country, right? And you aren’t surprised, either.

BUT, what will surprise you: we are going to St. George for T’giving! Who knew we could leave. Shane even made the reservation. You can pinch yourself, but it’s true!

    have a great thanksgiving! ;)

I’m so sorry about what happened at the mall this weekend. Super, super scary. But excited for you and your international thanksgiving getaway with 18 (!) friends. Wishing you and your lovely family a very happy Thanksgiving and I am thankful to call you a friend. :) xoxo

I just read your shooting post, and then this one, and OMG I am so glad you are OK. That was scaring me right to death, reading that. I’m so glad The King was right there, too.

And I loved! the movie, and posted my thoughts on the casting and page to screen transition at 3am after the midnight showing on opening night (Hi! I’m 14! again), and then posted about vampires again today, because…I have a sickness, and the only cure is more vampire? I really hope not; I just couldn’t help myself.

Happy! (almost) Thanksgiving to you and yours, babe. (Vancouver is one of my all-time favorite places on this planet.)

Congratulations to Chiada! That is one of my favourite albums, as well. I bought it for my husband a few Christmases ago and it’s still on heavy rotation ’round these parts. I love Sandler’s version of Werewolves of London, and Poor Poor Pitiful Me by Jackson Browne and Bonnie Raitt, but I think my favourite is Don’t Let Us Get Sick by Jill Sobule.

Also: Awesome idea, coming to Canada for Thanksgiving! Nobody up here’s doing anything, so everything will be open and babysitters won’t have like, prior engagements or family commitments.

I’m glad you liked the movie. I can’t wait to see it again tonight. It will be my 6th time. Edward is super hot, Rob is super hot, and them being one person it almost too much hottness for me to handle.

But, Edward drives a silver Volvo! Not an Audi. :) But you’re so right! The way he spins in to get Bella from the gross frat guys and the way he spins back out was freakin’ awesome.

    Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!!!

Gosh I just read your last two posts – I can’t imagine how scared you were!! When I was in Moscow first time round we got a phonecall from the UK telling us there had been 3 suicide bombers in the city – we were at a tourist market and had to get the metro home – we were terrified and we weren’t even at the place where it was all happening – all I can think of is my fear multiplied by a million and then maybe that’s how you felt! No wonder you fled!!

I’m so glad to hear you and your friends are ok.

Hope your thanksgiving is/was good (sorry I’m not sure exactly which day thanksgiving is and whether I’m late yet or not!)

Hope you’re having fun abroad, and that Canadian Edward Cullen is everything you dreamed.

Having three kids… only one of them had ever even heard of Twilight and none of them had read the book.

Two of them ended up seeing it within the first 1 1/2 days it was released. They both liked it – and one of them is a 16 year old boy! LOL.

  11. eva

Canadian Edward is definitely hotter than the pansy American Edward. And I forgive you for not calling only because you were in a group of 18, and next time I’m in Seattle with 17 other people I probably won’t think of calling you either:) Hope you had a great weekend here!

    Happy Canadian Turkey!

Still haven’t seen Twilight, but it does look pretty interesting. Robert Pattinson is still poor “pretty boy” Cedric Diggory to me, though.
