In which my parents get their first passport stamp
Posted by Isabel on February 12th, 2009. Filed under: They're just my friends, Vacations.Last year, with no trip planned, my parents got their first ever passports. My mom’s reasoning was that if they had a passport they’d be more likely to make international travel plans. I waiting, excitedly, to hear of a trip to Paris or Italy that my mom was planning. Alas, nothing was planned.
About six months ago my aunt informed me that she and her family were going to go to Mexico during her kid’s Mid Winter Break. I got all excited and told her she should invite my mom and dad to go with them.
Suggesting my parents travel with my aunt’s family isn’t an odd thing. I spent most of my childhood with their family. We camped together, visited Disneyland together and spent weekends at each other’s houses. My aunt, uncle and four cousins are basically an extension of my immediate family. Having my silly old parents join them in Mexico would be no big thang.
And that is how my parents ended up planning their first international trip in which they would be able to use their first passports.
My aunt, uncle, two teenage cousins and my mom and dad flew out on Tuesday morning, headed to Cancun and Tulum Mexico.
I received a text message from my aunt, right as they were boarding their plane. That’s the last I heard from them. I’m starting to get a little worried that they haven’t made contact with any of us left at home. Mostly because my dad never goes anywhere without his laptop and my aunt and uncle are pretty much attached to their cell phones.
This can only mean one of three things:
- They are all dead.
- They are having a blast and have no time to bother with us non-beach-dwelling-losers.
- They are having a horrible time in sunny Mexico and the laptop is only being used to look for return flights.
I’m hoping they are simple having too much fun sitting on the beach, reading books and working on their tans, to bother checking in with us kids left at home. (How hilarious is it that my dad visited the tanning booth a few too many times in preparation for this trip? HILARIOUS!)
Yesterday I texted one of my cousins who didn’t get to go on the trip (she’s all grown up and in college). I asked her if she’d heard from her mom. She hadn’t. Then I e-mailed both of my younger siblings to see if my parents had contacted them. My younger brother hadn’t heard from them and he didn’t seem to care about that. My younger sister, who has a history of calling my mom no less then seven times a day, had this to say:
I have not heard from them at all…. I am not sure if dad took the laptop or not. I hope so too. All that I know is I told them that they better bring me back a nice gift…..
(I’ve recently noticed that my sister never uses contractions in her e-mails. I’ve taken this to mean she isn’t sure how to correctly use them. When I asked her about her lack of contraction use, she said, “What’s a ‘contraction’?” I am not kidding.)
I informed my sister that she is a poopy-head and then told her that Mexico is not known of the land of “nice gifts”.
I’m really not worried at all about my family member’s safety. But I am worried that they aren’t having as good of a time as I told them they would have. I mean seriously, I’ve been talking up Tulum since The King and I visited Tulum’s gorgeous beaches back when I was first knocked up with Babboo. (Oh yes, we love Tulum. But not so much Cancun.)
Don’t worry, I informed my parents that they would see some nekked boobies on the beaches in Tulum. I also begged my mom, BEGGED her, to be mature about it. (I’ll let you know how that goes.)
Man, I wish I was living it up on the beach in Tulum right about now.
Instead I’ll be spending my weekend with my bestest friend May, who is visiting from Reno this weekend. While it’s no “beach vacation”, it’s pretty much just as good. Especially because crepes, crafting and episodes of “This American Life’ will be involved.
So, who wants to take bets on why my dad has yet to send a photo filled e-mail to me yet? Do you think he’s having the time of his life, or hating every second of the trip? (The King’s vote is that he’s hating every minute of it.)

So does your sister SPEAK with contractions? Or is she like Data from Star Trek?

Hey, I have things from Mexico! I bought a bead and shell necklace in Rosarito that I still wear. We also bought a big rustic pine armoire for our TV, which my sister somehow was able to “borrow” (long term) from us.
Tulum sounds totally awesome – especially the beach hut without electricity thing. I must look into that for one of these days.
Also, I don’t have a passport either and neither does Hub-E. However, we are planning on a road trip up to Port Angeles later this year and we hope to get on a ferry to Victoria. In which case I’d better get a move-on getting us passports! Woohoo! It’ll be our first stamp.

Well, when I went to cancun, I got an upset tummy. I hope that’s NOT the reason they aren’t calling….

I bet they are having fun. I mean, no news is *good* news, right?

If I were on the trip, it were me you hadn’t heard from? It would be because I forgot my power cord.

They are having a blast and can’t be bothered with calling all of you to tell you!

Maybe they have no cell service in Mexico? and are having too much fun to spend time on the computer??

Maybe this is really an intervention, and they are being forced to have no contact with you and your siblings as part of said intervention. Totally having a blast, they are, and the post cards you’ll receive two weeks after their return will attest to that.

Hey, we are looking at visiting Tulum when we honeymoon in Playa Mujeres in September. Tips and insider info would be muchas appreciated.
I’m sure they’re having a fabulous time.

How could they NOT be having a blast? Even though Cancun is not my favorite either, they do have some good shopping at Caracol and the Quihui market (I’m sure I spelled that wrong, but oh, well). But Tulum? Oh my. Puro paraiso. I’m with whoever said data service probably isn’t great. Technology outside (and sometimes inside) the resorts on the Yucatan is less than state-of-the-art.
Don’t worry! I can’t wait to hear about their trip!

[...] I did it twice last week. The first time was with the post about my parent’s trip to Mexico and then again with last Thursday’s post about my marriage [...]
