In which I’m a city snob

Posted by Isabel on March 27th, 2009. Filed under: City Living, The King, The New House.

The first time I visited The King in Seattle, I knew I had found my “home”.  Not only was The King Dreamy McDreamypants, but The City was awesome.  I loved seeing the tall buildings, the buses and the fancy stores.

It was nothing like I was used to back in Utah.

And that was a very good thing.

I moved to Seattle post-haste.

So yeah, I love living in the city.  I love riding the bus to work everyday.  I love only having one car.  I love working in a high rise building and being part of the bustling city life.

That being said, The King and Babboo put down the sod for our new front yard last night.

HOLY CRAP, we have a (front) yard.

The thing is, living in the city means we don’t really have a lot of extra space.  We knew our yard was going to be small-ish.  The King called the sod farm and placed our order.  He wasn’t 100% sure how much we needed….so he ordered $40 worth of sod.

Um yeah, it took less then $40 of sod to cover our entire new yard.

We even had left overs.

Not only can we now have picnics in our front yard, but I don’t think we’ll have to buy a lawn mower.

We’ll just trim the grass with scissors.

My parents are coming out in a few weeks for a visit.  They do not live in the city.  They live in the country.  The do not understand city living.  They’re going to fall over when they see the new yard.

I mean seriously, their front yard could eat my front yard for breakfast.

And um, we won’t even discuss the size of their back yard.

So tell me, have you ever seen a smaller yard then our new one?

We live in a condo in Seattle and have no yard. Not even a balcony with plants. This confuses most people. We love it, because I hate the outdoors and my husband hates yardwork. We are considering moving, because my husband works on the Eastside now and his commute is awful. And my parents keep trying to explain to us that since have kids, we MUST have a yard for them to play in. I don’t think they’re going to manage to convince us though.

Congrats on the new front yard, the new grass looks lovely!

I love your citified lawn. I raelize that SLC isn’t the largest city in the world, and I would love love LOVE to live downtown in an even bigger city. I love the small town where I grew up, but I would never want to live there again.

Indeed, I have seen a smaller yard than that. At my house. My “yard” does not contain one single blade of grass, let alone $40 worth of sod.

I love the big city. . . I can’t WAIT to come to Seattle again sometime.

I have no yard…I live in a building full of apartments and have nothing but a windowsill. I put a pumpkin and a pot of mums on it last fall and one day, I came home and the mums were gone. I’m on the third floor, so someone could not have taken them. I figured the wind blew them down, though I didn’t see them below the window on the ground. I felt bad about it…maybe I need an entire windowbox?

Your yard is so tiny and cute. It seriously looks like the King could lay down, stretch his fingers and toes and be touching the edges. My husband would love to have a yard that size.

Trim it with scissors. HA HA!

no joke, my front yard is the size of ONE piece of that sod. And I love it.

I think I’m the opposite. I lived on Queen Anne in Seattle for a year it was just too busy for me. I now live on Bainbridge Island in the woods, and can hop on a 30 minute ferry to enjoy the city. It’s too bad I have to come to Seattle every day for work, I’d be SO happy coming once or twice per month. Your little yard is cute, though :)

My parents have a back lawn about that size, because they live in a community where no one really has a lawn and they pay a huge HOA fee to have the communal front lawn taken care of. Anyway, Mom uses a weed eater to “mow” it.

Do you have a backyard or is that it? In a city, especially Seattle, what you have is excellent. But a backyard would help it out a little, you know, if you wanted to sunbathe in a bikini in “privacy” or something.

What do I have to bribe you with to have you make and send me a shrinky dink mustache necklace? I quite want one but fear burning myself on the stove. Am not talented…

I think your small yard is awesome. It’s just the right size for city life!

Hmmm… yes, I do believe you win my personal prize for the smallest yard owned. We had just the same size ‘yard’ when we just had the two kids and they were about ages 3 and 1 but it was when we lived in the apartments. It was ‘ours’ but we didn’t own it. Same size though. Ugh.

I hate yardwork, hate landscaping and hate swarms of gnats and mosquitos but I LOVE big yards. Ours is only 1/10th of an acre at this house and it’s the smallest we’ve ever owned. I HATE it. Must have at least 2 acres.

I once lived in a townhouse with a front yard that was exactly big enough to house four pansies. It was so small that a toddler could hop over it. We always theorized that it was so small because the contractors figured out they could save a bunch of money by not paving those little areas. The sod looks nice!

It’s rather more common in Britain to have either a very small or no front yard – I was lucky enough to grow up in a house with a front and back garden but I know many people who live without them, especially those who live in old terraced houses… even in small towns and some villages you can’t always guarantee much of a garden, Britain just isn’t big enough lol

I love your small yard, but it’s probably because I’m a city person too. I love, love, love the city and I love to be as close as possible. Downtown SLC is one of my favorite places. I wish I could have seen more of downtown Seattle while I was there, not to mention your house! I was super bummed. :(

BUT! We might be coming back up your way soon….. ;)

That’s what parks are for. Let someone else mow the grass.

[...] Anyway, the front yard is done. And it looks lovely. I can say this because I had nothing to do with it. I had no vision. I planted no plants. All that I’ve done is stain the fence and do some weeding. Oh, I mowed the grass once last week. (It took less then 3 minutes, since you know; we have the smallest lawn ever.) [...]
