In which Baby Shower #1 was a success
Posted by Isabel on April 28th, 2009. Filed under: Addictions, The King, They're just my friends.Remember how I hosted a baby shower last Friday? And remember how I’m hosting another baby shower this Friday? I think I might start answering my phone; “Baby Shower Central. Isabel speaking.”
(I won’t answer it that way. Don’t worry.)
But dude, the baby showers are taking over my life. Which is better then The Swine Flu or lice taking over my life. Hey, I’m just sayin’.
Like I told you before, last Friday’s baby shower was a Recycled Baby Shower, meaning the mom wanted hand-me-downs, etc. The colors were brown and green and, since the mom is obsessed with owls, the official mascot was the owl.
With the help of two of my lady friends we were able to pull of Baby Shower #1.

See the twigs in the black vase? The attendees wrote advice on a little leaf and then hung them on the twigs. So freakin’ cute, if I do say so myself. See the nut cups on the cake platter? Yeah, I made them. See the owl cupcakes on the other cake platter? Yeah, I did not make them.

As if I could make a little owl cupcake. Seriously, I would not be allowed to even try to make something this freakin’ adorable.
While the owl cupcakes were super cute and quite the hit at the baby shower, nothing compared to the green apples and caramel dip. Did you see the green apples and caramel dip in the corner?

Get ready to have your mind blown.
Okay, did you know that if you take a can of sweetened condensed milk and boil it (in the can, sans label) for three hours it turns into caramel?
FOR REALS!!
How have I gone 33 years without knowing this? I mean, seriously, it just turns into caramel. You don’t have to do anything except boil the can of condensed milk.
(It’s true. I even googled it.)
I quizzed the girl who brought the condensed milk/caramel dip to the shower and asked her why she had never told me about this. She said she assumed everyone already knew!
I DID NOT KNOW.
I asked around the baby shower and found out that NOBODY ELSE KNEW about this.
Of course I got super excited and told The King all about it. To which he replied; “yeah, I know.”
Nine years I’ve known him, NINE YEARS, and he never once mentioned that you can make caramel simply by boiling sweetened condensed milk?!
He was all; “I used to do that all the time on my mission in Germany.”
Whatever.
All I can say is if he’s got more information like this, he needs to share it sooner rather then later.
So tell me did you know about this? DID YOU?

I had no idea!! You have just made my day…I want to go out right now and buy a can to try it!
April 28th, 2009 at 4:31 pm
I didn’t know that either!! That is seriously so cool, I’m totally going to try it.
The shower spread is adorable!
April 28th, 2009 at 5:00 pm
I confess, I did.
The baby shower looks very adorable though. Excellent work.
April 28th, 2009 at 5:00 pm
I did not know about this. My mind, it is BLOWN. I need to try this!
April 28th, 2009 at 5:21 pm
I did not know but THANK YOU for sharing! I’m always looking for ways to make my backside even larger!! LOL
April 28th, 2009 at 5:28 pm
The owls are adorable….
HELLO! I HAD NO IDEA THAT’S HOW YOU MAKE CARAMEL!! Do you take the lid off? Boil on the stove? Dang, I’m soooo making my own caramel.

Yeah, I knew. My high school Spanish teacher (of all people) taught me that.
But if it makes you feel better, I’ve never actually tried it on my own.
April 28th, 2009 at 5:31 pm
Our neighborhood cookbook has the “recipe” but I’ve never tried it. (Am I the only who’s noticed that some of the cans have “do not boil” on the wrapper?)
April 28th, 2009 at 5:39 pm
What? Really? I’ll have to try it! I did not know!
April 28th, 2009 at 5:44 pm
I had absolutely no idea… I have now been enlightened. Thank you… must.make.caramel.now.
April 28th, 2009 at 6:12 pm
I had no idea. This may be a stupid question, but do you open the can first? I realize this is a dumb question, but I’m trying to figure out if you remove the label and just let it bob around in the pan or if you open the can and let the water only come up so far?
April 28th, 2009 at 7:22 pm
What the . . . Sweetened Condensed Milk turns into Caramel? Really? That’s amazing! Seriously amazing! It’s like magic! I’m so excited to try this out.
April 28th, 2009 at 7:36 pm
Wait.. am I the only one who noticed that you said boil for THREE HOURS??? Who has THREE HOURS to sit and boil condensed milk??
Are you for real?? THREE HOURS???
April 28th, 2009 at 7:52 pm
I’m with Britt. It sounds amazingly cool (like a science project you can eat), but THREE HOURS? I don’t got time for that. Maybe in 10 years…
April 28th, 2009 at 8:58 pm
I absolutely DID NOT know that! Seriously? Boil the can for three hours and that’s it? Caramel? I’m going to have to go back and check your google link because now I want to try it – to see it for myself!
Those owl cupcakes are freaking cute. What are the eyes made out of by chance?
April 28th, 2009 at 9:59 pm
I did NOT know this at all. Thank goodness we have you Isabel to share your knowledge.
April 28th, 2009 at 11:18 pm
I had no idea, which is not surprising, but neither did my husband, which IS surprising. The part of the directions about “if the can isn’t ALWAYS in water, the can may explode!” is a little daunting, though. Love the baby shower spread, you are truly thoughtful.
April 28th, 2009 at 11:19 pm
I did not know this AT ALL, but I have questions about the logisitcs. How do you boil something for three hours? And wouldn’t the an explode if it were closed? I am confused. Explain.
April 28th, 2009 at 11:54 pm
I had no idea! And I am SO, SO happy I don’t have condensed milk in the house because I would totally make this for a late night snack right now.
April 29th, 2009 at 12:09 am
WHAT? Does that even make sense? I had nooooo frigggging clue. NONE. WHAT? We might need a tutorial.
April 29th, 2009 at 1:22 am
I didn’t know that! (and I know a lot of random things) And I asked the Pretend Husband if he had ever heard of it and he said no, too. But now we both want to try it (unfortunately it’s less than two hours until bedtime, so it won’t be happening immediately)
I loooooove those owl cupcakes and may have to steal the idea (but will give credit to the Internet, of course)
April 29th, 2009 at 1:27 am
Super cute decorations and refreshments. Can you come throw a baby shower for me?!?
Just kidding. Kind of.
I had no idea either. Maybe we’re just oblivious in Utah. Of course, now that I know it’s so easy, the caramel will be flowing at our house.
April 29th, 2009 at 2:43 am
SO cute!!! I had NO idea about the caramel!!
April 29th, 2009 at 6:32 am
I’ve known it forever, it’s how my Grandma makes caramel tart. But I never thought it if being a dip!
It looks like an awesome party!
April 29th, 2009 at 3:36 pm
The only way I know how to make caramel is to cook sugar in water! Right?
The owl cupcakes are fantastic and I am sure that you could totally have made them yourself! I didn’t comment on the treasure chest but I already thought it was brilliant. So owl cupcakes = easy game
April 29th, 2009 at 4:38 pm
I knew this, my Mom used to make it when we were young. It is soooo delicious. I think I will have to make some soon.
April 29th, 2009 at 4:50 pm
I did not know this, either. It would be easier to melt those individually wrapped caramels
April 30th, 2009 at 1:38 am
I have never heard of this either, but I’m totally stoked to try it out! I want to run to the store right now to get some sweetened condensed milk in a can so I can make some delicious caramel, but 1) I don’t have anything to dip in it, and 2) I have to finish this freakin’ paper that’s due tomorrow. Curse Finals!!!!
So, more info on this boiling process… do you submerge the entire can in a pot of water, then put a lid on the pot, and then boil for 3 hours? I just want to make sure I get it right so I can try it asap. Dude, I totally share your enthusiasm about this.
April 30th, 2009 at 5:06 am
I did too…but only through my husband who made it on his mission in Japan.
haha i wonder if its a standard mission thing.hmm

I did not know about this. Mind = blown.
Also, I read through all the comments to see if I’m the only person who thinks the phrase “nut cups” is funny. Apparently I am. Because I’m a twelve-year-old boy.
