In which I make love to my iPod
Posted by Isabel on June 5th, 2009. Filed under: Addictions, Back in the Day, Old 97's, Rhett Miller, They're just my family.I take my music listening very seriously. That doesn’t mean I’m a music snob. It just means….I take my music listening very seriously. I spend no less then eight hours a day with ear bugs stuck in my ears.
Oh yes, muy seriously.
Thanks to my recent birthday I recently came into a windfall of iTunes gift cards. (Note to Universe: PERFECT GIFT!) Upon receiving these gift cards my first thought was:
RHETT MILLER’S NEW SOLO ALBUM!!!

Oh yes, Rhett Miller has a self-titled solo album that drops comes out June 9th. (That’s next Tuesday.) But then I remembered that I had already pre-ordered a copy of “Rhett Miller”. (Pre-ordering got me a FREE autograph with my copy.) (It’s in the mail.)
I spent this week looking for The Perfect Summer Songs. I took suggestions. I reviewed my current iPod collection and as of this morning, I have compiled a new playlist:
I call this playlist “Summer Tunes”. (And you can see it HERE.)
I’ve covered all the bases. I made sure to include the two available songs from “Glee” (love!) as well as a Joey Lawrence song, a Justin Timberlake song, a New Kids on the Block song and a song that mentions New Kids on the Block.
I dare anyone to listen to any of the songs on this playlist and not automatically feel happier and more boppy. Seriously, it’s guaranteed to make anyone feel happy. (It’s been tested over the last few hours and it appears to be working!)
I admit this playlist is not completed. Oh no. I’m still up for suggestion as my iTunes gift cards STILL HAVE MONEY ON THEM. Please feel free to make any Perfect Summer Song suggestions to me.
Also, Monday is my mom’s birthday. What do you give the woman who has everything? You commission this:

After seeing my mom snuggled up to Mr. Edward Cullen, my sister commissioned her own copy:

My mom’s copy will be delivered on her birthday in a shiny new frame. Along with a sheet of wallet sized pictures she can hand out to her friends.
I’m not kidding.
So yeah, what do you think is The Perfect Summer Song?
(Just wait until I post a picture of what I got The King for Father’s Day. JUST WAIT!)

So, maybe I started (happily) crying while watching the Glee cast sing “Don’t Stop Believing” on the pilot episode. MAYBE.
(Journey–their entire two-album Greatest Hits–is my all-time favorite summer listening. It always reminds me of being at the lake, dangling my bare feet off a dock.)

Well, if I’m not attempting to suggest new artists (and yay! you liked the Mountain Goats enough to add), my all time favorite summer song is The Boys of Summer by Don Henley. A bit cheesy perhaps, but I have such good memories associated with this song…

I noticed you had LFO on there… I was obsessed with this song the year it came out. OBSESSED and listened to it all summer… *Happy sigh…
Anyways, if you like that song, you’ll love “Moments with You” by Gran Torino. Trust me.

Rilo Kiley’s “Silver Lining” on Under The Blacklight. I know the album has been out for a few years, but it’s my new favorite song. LOVE.
Also, if you’re looking for happy, Louie Prima is AWESOME. Pennies from Heaven (so happy), but really anything off his Collectors Series. Love that album.
And, of course I’m going to say MATES OF STATE (WOOOO!), “Fantasy” off of Bring It Back. Also love it.
I hope your mom likes her present. I mean, how can she not, right? But I hope she really does…

“Summertime” by D.J. Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince. LOVE it!

Cool pics!
And I just picked up some Isabel-approved reading material from the library: Twilight!! I think I’m the last person on the planet to read it. And don’t tell me what happens…I’m only on the first few pages!

I was going to say “Summertime” by The Fresh Prince, but someone beat me to it, and I find that mildly amusing. Because that’s how behind the times I am. I’m all MUSIC? WHAT?

Andrew Bird, Nervous Tic Motion
David Gray, Please Forgive Me
ANYTHING by Kate Nash, she is my new favorite.

I just bought Fire Burning by Sean Kingston. It’s totally not my style, but for some reason, I can’t help but dancing around the house when I play this song. Also Beautiful Girls from Sean Kingston is another good one. Thanks for this post, I’ve been needing some new music on my playlist!

I love your list! I was thinking of Yael Naim and you already had her! That was the case times about seven songs on your list. Awesome! Thanks for the downloading recommendations. Check out “Vampire Weekend” – they have a song I’m loving now called “A Punk.” Also a song called “Such Great Heights” by The Postal Service.

Umm, currently listening to Rhett Miller’s new CD! WOO-HOO! Did you get it? What do you think? I’m dying to know.
Thanks so much for the heads-up about the signed copy, you rock!

Summer songs…I’d go with almost anything by the Foo Fighters, one of the great summer bands.

Love the picture, but you already knew that.
These are the best summer songs:
“Penny and Me” by Hanson
“Makedamnsure” by Taking Back Sunday
“When Your Heart Stops Beating” by +44
“One Sweet World”, “The Best of What’s Around” & “What Would You Say” by Dave Matthews Band (”One Sweet World” needs to be the live version from Luther College, and it must be noted that it’s more of a Summer-Nights song)
These are some of my favorite songs to listen to for the summer time!

I’m all about summertime tunes that pump you up. Two I would add would be “The Kissing Game (I Like the Way)” by Hi-Five (remember them?) and “Dirrty” by Christina Aguilera. I’ve been thinking about that song for days and finally pulled it out tonight. I will be jamming in the car on the way to work tomorrow!
