I hate everyone that’s at BlogHer (and by “hate” I mean “am totally jealous of”)

Posted by Isabel on July 23rd, 2009. Filed under: Addictions, BlogHer07, Bullet points are your friend, Churchy Stuff, The King.

My boss is gone all this week.  Because of this I fully intended to blog EVERY.SINGLE.DAY this week.

Hi, it’s Thursday and I haven’t blogged since Monday.

Go me.

Since today is the day that everyone (except me) is flying to Chicago for BlogHer ‘09 there really isn’t anyone on the interweb that will read any posts for the rest of the week.

So really, why bother blogging?

Why bother?  Well, I guess because there are a few of us around that are not going to BlogHer.

While I have been to BlogHer before (BlogHer ‘07 4eva!), it’s still a bummer to be at work today while so many of my fave people are converging in Chicago.  When the dates for BlogHer ‘09 were announced, I was fully intending on being 34 weeks pregnant.  So basically,  traveling to Chicago was not at the top of my list.

Once I realized I would not be giving birth in August, I gave BlogHer a thought.  But the issue of money and vacation time and abandoning my husband and child came into play and I soon realized I wouldn’t be going.

This is probably (probably) for the best since The King is currently still unemployed.

Sidenote: Anyone looking to hire a super hott guy in Seattle, let me know!

We are in no position to be spending money frivolously.  (Says the girl who can’t stop looking at shoes sales online!)  A solo trip to Chicago falls under the “frivolous”  category.

And to make this post a little more discombobulated, may I please present you with a bullet list.

Things I have thought about posting this week, but haven’t:

  • My new medication is working like magic.  If this is what ‘normal” feels like, I wish I would have started taking them 20 years ago.
  • This new medication makes me appreciate my husband more.  If you know what I mean.  (And I think you do.)
  • The new medication has some super nasty side effects which makes my husband NOT appreciate me more.  (Namely tonsillolith and constipation.   As of this week, I think I have them both under control.)
  • The King gave himself a buzz cut earlier this month.  I was 100% against this.  And now, I LOVE IT SO MUCH AND HOPE HE NEVER GROWS HIS HAIR OUT.
  • Seriously, the buzz cut is making me crazy wild.new-hair-cut
  • It may also be the new medication that is aiding in my love of the new hair cut.
  • We have a very religious friend (not a Mormon) who has asked to attend our church services.  This has never happened to me before and therefore, I don’t know how to deal with this.  Discuss.
  • I have been reading my scriptures every morning before work.  This is a totally new thing for me.  And, low and behold, it makes for a better day.  Go figure.
  • The King has had quite a few job interviews where he gets to don a suit.  Dude, my husband looks hott in a suit and a skinny tie.
  • Seriously, the new medication is doing a number on me.
  • The King and My Sweet Babboo attended their first Fathers & Sons camp out last weekend.  The Fathers & Sons is sort of a “right of passage” in the LDS church.  They had a blast camping.
  • We’ve been searching online this week for used camping gear so that we can do some camping as a family. (Can anyone recommend good camping spots in Washington?)
  • The next round of the Super Duper Blogger Book Exchange (which is by invitation only) starts in September.  I have my book and my pen and I’m ready to write on all sorts of new books.
  • Our Thanksgiving trip to Puerto Rico may be off.  The couple we were going with has recently used up their vacation fund to fund fertility treatments.  (I’d rather they got their baby over us taking a vacation!)

So yeah, I have tons of things that I wanted to blog about this week, but just never got around to.  My boss is going to be gone next week too.

Maybe I’ll tackle some of these topics then.  In the mean time, I hope everyone is enjoying BlogHer ‘09, EVEN THOUGH I’M NOT THERE.

I so hear you about BlogHer. This was going to be my first year going but the economy sucks butt. Which is probably better because I have anxiety just thinking about meeting all these people I blog with and them not wanting to sit with me at lunch. Sigh.

As for the friend at church- I’ve been in this situation a couple of times- and I think the BIGGEST thing you can do is avoid explaining things before he/she asks questions, and resist the urge to apologize for things. If your ward is anything like the ones I’ve been in, I would bring a friend and the whole drive there I’d try to “prep” them for the crying babies and every crazy thing someone could say and destroy every stereotype that could present itself before they walked in the building. I’ve always regretted doing this, as I think they noticed the crazies more because I said something. Now I try to bring out people’s attributes when we’re there. Like if someone gets up to talk or is teaching the lesson, I’ll lean over and say, “Remember when we moved a few months ago, that guy helped us out SO MUCH.” or “She works in the building next to ours, she’s a really good teacher.” That way I still have stuff to say about the people around us, but it’s positive and I’m not FREAKING. I don’t know why bringing people to church is like bringing them home to meet a dysfunctional family. They’re crazy, and you might get offended sometimes, but you love them because they are there.

For the briefest of time I stopped taking birth control and holy cow, I know what you’re saying about feeling a little different about your husband all the sudden! Then, I got pregnant (weird huh!?) I fully intend to find a non-hormonal method of birth control after this, because that was cool!

We bought our gear new at REI on sale – we already had piles of backpacking aka teensy tents, stoves etc, but needed family sized stuff. Our 6-man tent was around $200 on sale and we love it! Megan’s pack n play fits in there, along with our queen sized airbed (from costco! also cheap!) and the ten thousand duffle bags you need when you have a family of three even though you needed only two when you were just a couple. Also – craigslist. Everything is on craigslist!

  4. Leslie

I recommend craigslist for camping gear.

Also, I heard from a friend that lives in your area that there are some church owned campgrounds. They went and got reservations at the last minute and loved it.

OMG. I needed a warning about the tonsil bit. I googled it and about died when I read the home remedies for removing them. I really think I died a little! Ahhhh.

I didn’t get to go to Blogher, either, but my reasoning is because Ihave no blog readers, LOL. I’m super jealous of all the fun they’re having, too! :)

Good for you (and your hott husband) on the positives going on. Do check out your local freecycle. I’ve seen tons of stuff listed on mine. Happy camping!

  7. Mimi

I had tonsiloliths when I was younger, but I never thought to describe them to anyone or find out what they were called. I know that wasn’t the point of your post, but thanks for the info!

  8. Britt

Actually… SDBBE starts in August. Don’t be a month behind or it will totally screw your group :)

So what is this medication that makes you love your husband so much? And where can I get me some of that?

  9. Krys

I would very much like to be at Blogher as well, but alas, I’m at home.

What is this medication you speak of? I have been talking about getting back on my Prozac because it does those things to me. Too bad doctors around these parts SUCK!

It makes me so happy that you’re feeling happy. I love to hear that. Now go eat some of your dried cherries and be even happier.

The state parks here are fabulous. You can reserve online. There are showers (take quarters). And flushable toilets. One of our favorites is Larabee up near Bellingham. Mountains for hiking and a body of water for playing. Fun tidepools. Bathrooms are clean. Shade. Outlets in the bathrooms. But, check out Washington State Parks (I always do a search) because they are inexpensive and comparable to any of the church parks here.

I’m still reading – too far away in the UK for BlogHer and we don’t have anything like that over here that I am aware of :o ( Sucks a bit, really!! The new medication sounds great (well apart from the side effects you had) – glad you’re feeling better, it’s horrid to feel rough… I so appreciate the “is this what ‘normal’ feels like?!” reaction to finding the right meds for you – really does make the biggest difference to your life in such little ways as well as big, huh? Hmmm what else did you bullet… oh yeah, way to go The King on getting his interviews and looking hott ;o) Glad to hear that reading Scripture in the morning makes for a better day – I often mean to start my day by meditating/praying or reading but very rarely manage it *blushes* I end up on here catching up with everybody!! As for your religious friend, not sure what it’s like taking someone new wit you to church but from my perspective I would guess the friend is curious as to whether LDS is for her and the only way she’ll know is to go and visit and knowing you and how cool you are makes the whole process far less intimidating (avoids the wondering what is going to happen next, who should I talk to, who are all these people kind of things that make going somewhere new scary and can detract from the whole point of going: to get to know what LDS is all about!)

Deception Pass state park (up on Whidbey Island) is awesome. It’s temperate, has lots of fun easy hikes and has a freshwater lake across the sand from the ocean, canoeing and a snack bar. So it’s more doable to swim (especially for a child) but still be near the ocean. They have showers! The only downside is that it is popular and might be booked in advance.

The San Juans are also pretty. I always like camping on the west side of the state so you don’t have to deal with worrying about snakes and bears (in the mountains) – although in 33 years of camping in WA I’ve never seen either!

Lake Wenatchee (also a state park, I think) is also a popular one if you like things a little hotter. It’s near Leavenworth for fun touristy things and (obviously) on a lake.

OMG, I get tonsiliths too! Not often, but it happens and it’s probably the grossest thing ever. Even worse than constipation. I just figured out what they were called a few months ago.

Anyway, I’m not at BlogHer either. It’s sad, but I honestly didn’t expect it to sell out in MARCH! Boo.

  15. Amity

Dude, what drugs are you on? I think I need to get me some of that…

  16. Monica

Wow what kind of meds are those and where do we get some?

My hubby also shaved his head, actually his brother shaved it for him and I took pics of them both with their shirts off one shaving the others head. I so want to post it on the internet with a caption that says “not as gay as it looks” but he would kill me. I digress, the shaved head is totally hot.

BlogHer ‘07 4eva, indeed! It wasn’t the same without you this year. And you know what? I got to finally meet the great Amalah, and when she talked about meeting bloggers she’s missed over the years, she mentioned you specifically. “Isabel from Hola, Isabel,” she said. So know your presence was missed by even the hottest A-listers.

Maybe we can all try for BlogHer ‘10 in NYC! So long as it doesn’t sell out by Christmas or something.

  18. Christar

It makes my heart so happy to hear that you’re doing so great!!! You’re one of the coolest people I know and you deserve to be oh-so-happy all the time. And medication that makes you love your significant other more? AND appreciate them more? AND doing wonders for making people more happy?? Dude, I know someone who could definitely use that.

  19. Liza

I missed you at BlogHer, too. 07 4eva.

And I love The King’s new do! Very nice. Congrats on the mostly amazing sounding meds!

Re people joining you at church… I feel like I don’t understand what the big deal is. While I haven’t ever visited an LDS church, I’ve visited a lot of other churches and a few synagogues, and have never had a negative experience. (Mmm, ok, there was 1. But it was probably 25 years ago, and it obviously didn’t stop me from continuing to visit churches.)

Also, isn’t sharing the faith a central tenant of your religion? Here’s someone who actually asked! What does The King think? Or other friends of yours who have done Mission work?

Also? If I ever manage to be visiting Seattle over a Sunday, I want to go to church with you.
