In which The King gets a job
Posted by Isabel on December 3rd, 2009. Filed under: The King, The New House, Work.In case you hadn’t noticed, this pretty site has been down all week. Apparently some mean-bot keeps attacking my site and causing all sorts of problems to the company that is in charge of all my technical stuff.
Or something like that.
Anyway, it’s fixed now.
(Thanks to all the awesome readers who sent me worried e-mails. Have no fear, holaisabel.com is still here. And it will be for at least another year, since I just prepaid for a year of service!)
The King has yet to find a job. He continues to scan the internet for jobs and he’s submitting his resume like crazy. He’s also still interviewing (and wearing his suit, yummy)! During this time sans full time job he was able to finish up a lot of the little things at our house. He totally cleaned out our office and got it all set up.
This was our office in the middle of the project (yes, it was even worse then this):
This is our office now:
He installed a coat rack (above the radiator, so our coats are always warm).
Once he got done with all the projects around our house he started helping some of our friends finish their house so they can put it on the market. Our friends were nice enough to offer to pay The King, and he gladly accepted it since he has not other income right now!
Three weeks ago another friend of ours asked The King if he could help him install some new windows at his house. Since he doesn’t have too much to do during the day he agreed to help the guy out, for trade. (The guy is going to help The King with a bigger project at our house.) While installing the windows it came out that these friends wanted to totally remodel their kitchen and bathroom. They started to ask The King his opinion and blah, blah, blah they decided to hire him to do all the work.
This time for payment.
The King then met the neighbor. Apparently he has a house that he’s remodeling. But he doesn’t have the time. And so he hired The King to remodel his bathroom.
Again, for payment.
We realized last weekend that The King now has a full time job. It just isn’t the job that he ever expected to have. He’s totally gone from being White Collar to being Blue Collar. He’s never worked a day in construction, but he’s designed and built us two houses. So he knows what he’s doing and he already owns all the tools.
This is the perfect time of year for us to be having The King bring in some money. He’s actually making more money doing this remodel work then he did at his real live work-in-an-office job. Interesting.
Of course The King is still interviewing and putting out his resume. Now he’s just doing it in between demolishing bathrooms and making trips to the Home Depot.
Who knows, maybe this will turn into a career. We aren’t against the idea.
So tell me, anyone need some remodel work done? I can totally refer a super dreamy guy to do the work.

I have several jobs I’d like to hire The King for, if only I lived less than three thousand miles away. Hooray for a new job, even if it isn’t necessarily permanent! After designing and building two houses I’m sure he’s great at it!

It looks great! And I’m so glad he’s found something that he likes to do and that brings in money. Always a great combo

OH thank god you’re back. I checked 6 or 7 times and thought about sending you an email and then decided it was too stalker”ish” and then checked andsosheblogs because I figure if you died or anything bad like that Carrisa would say something. And I checked Rhi (because maybe she would post something if the bad thing had taken both you and Carrisa out) and the Seattle Times (honored and beloved blogger Hola Isabel met with a Tragic Accident would be the headline on the front page.) So I guess an email wouldn’t have been half as stalker”ish” as what I ended up doing. But what great news about The King! Really resourceful. And manly! If we had any money I would have him come and rescue me from my kitchen. My hideous hideous kitchen. But no money. Spending it all on daycare. Nice to have you back.

We missed you. I was totally in the don’t-want-to-be-a-stalker-but-where-is-she camp. I kept thinking about sending an email, but worrying it would come out poorly like the one time I commented on a previous post. I still feel bad about that! Welcome back!

Do you realize how valuable The King is? HE ORGANIZED THE OFFICE. Not to compare our husbands (but I’m totally going to do it anyway), but Mr. May’s “office” is a pigsty. PIGSTY. It’s so bad, that every time I walk by it I shudder. And I walk by it about 500x a day. So it’s bad news.
Yay for $! It’s good to have it coming in, AND good to spend it. Hooray!!!

Does he do the construction work in a suit?
December 3rd, 2009 at 11:00 pm
Does he replace sewer lines? If so send him my way!
December 3rd, 2009 at 11:58 pm
Or like May suggested… the office. Oh how I wish my home office looked like your home office. I think I want the office more than the kitchen.
Did I just say that?

I love what he did to your office. Like Jen, I would also hire The King to fix some thing in our house, if only you weren’t on the other side of the country. Boo! (And also congratulations! The King could totally remodel full-time.)

Hooray for the King! Sounds like the kind of job he would find very satisfying.
If he ever wants to come to Colorado and help refinish some old hardwood floors, let us know! We don’t have a very big budget, but if he could get himself here (and bring you and Babboo, naturally), we could totally work something out.

It’s funny how doors open when you least expect it. We have a friend who retired from the Navy. He was an air traffic controller for 20 years and everyone figured he’d just do that when he got out. But he had tiled most of his house and that led people to have him tile theirs. Well 4 years later our friend hugely (is that a word) supplements his Navy retirement as a floor tiler and he says he is happier than he could ever have imagined. It’s creative, he works when he wants to, and he makes a good income from it. So yeah for you hubby finding work that he enjoys and for being open to various means to earn income.
I have always thought handy guys were hot! Good think my hubby is very handy!! LOL He replaced all the light fixtures in my house when we were dating and I think it was about that time I knew I was going to marry this guy!

awesome! my husband, a disgruntled attorney, always says that he’d feel more fulfilled having a job in construction. he likes the pride that comes with seeing a project through to completion and enjoys working with his hands. it’s much more satisfying than drafting agreements and negotiating contracts, i’m sure.

that’s great news! congrats king! all those years of hard work (after work) will hopefully pay off in a business. i can totally see that

I totally need the King’s work at my house. Too bad I live across the world from you.
(Incidentally, I just heard a Rhett Miller song on Pandora, which is what made me think, “I haven’t checked Isabel’s site in a while.”
)

ACTUALLY.
Well. Okay. Nevermind. You’re kind of far away. The commute would kill him.

If Moosh In Indy and I could get together, we could share The King. St. Louis and Indy are only a few hours apart.
Love the new site, love that The King is doing well, love that you have conquered The Tired, love the Babboo boob story. And love your blog.

When we lived in DC, we had a guy like your husband remodel our house — Leo was friendly, responsible, hard working, smart, nice, incredibly clean, and a family man.
We joked that he was the official remodeler of AOL, since we met him through a co-worker who was his college roommate, and he wound up doing work for nearly everyone in my department. In fact, we liked his work so much that when we moved from DC to VA, we hired him again.
The funniest part was that during our initial interview, he seemed incredibly awkward about our family…but by the time he’d watched us bicker about the color of the tile or some detail involving the cabinets, he totally got that we were just like any other family he’d ever worked for.
If only we were homeowners. We’d totally have you and The King come work on our house. Even over Leo, our previous favorite remodeler.

When my husband was out of work (for a very long 14 months) he did similar things. I still wish, sort of, that he had changed professions/careers during that time (he want back to the same company that laid him off, eventually). My point is: AWESOME!!!! On so many levels. That constant how-will-we-survive feeling that comes with unemployment is just so horrible, and actual income makes a big dent in the worry.
I hope he finds his way soon!

That’s very cool!
